I just put a new handle on this past weekend and was just wondering if anybody has put a light in to illuminate the keyhole? I see it has a separate peice in the handle for that but mine is solid black. Are there any cars out there anyone knows of with similar handles that have lighted keyholes that would interchange?

All the ones that ive seen have been black. Its really more of a trim piece to make the lock cylinder look a little better. I'm pretty sure the lock cylinder is bigger than the hole, otherwise it'd fall through when you pulled the key out, so lighting it from behind is out. So it looks like (to me at least) your only other option here is to get a custom piece made of clear plastic, wet sand it til its foggy and light it from inside the door, fiber optic style. You'd have to make sure you wrapped the led in black electrical tape so your window, speaker grille, etc didnt glow... Could be a really nice touch if done correctly, though. And you get extra points for posting an idea we haven't seen here a million times over. lol.

Just wanted to update, I found this stuff at Wal-Mart earlier and I think I might be able to pull this off after all. I'll find out tomorrow if it can be "molded" and if can be sanded and stuff, might be some interesting projects you could do with this stuff. Hardens like clear plastic. Just thought I'd share.

What do you think I could use to make a mold of this little keyhole ring peice? I was thinking play-doh but does anyone have a better idea? By the way, I mixed a little of this stuff up, took three days to dry, but it is very durable and strong. Ripped the popsicle stick when I tried to pull it out. The texture feels just like the real carbon fiber dash kit, the one with the real glossy finish. I'm pretty confident in it now. Now I'm ready to make some kind of mold and get started.

what about this?
http://www.culinart.net/silicone.html
a silicone mold would make it easier to get your part out afterword this is going to kickass if it works out right.

yep, get a silicon rtv molding material to make the mold.
(no mold release is needed with silicon)
Most hobby stores (ie. hobby lobby) sell kits from alumilite that would work great for this.

and if you get crystal clear casting resin you can make all the clear parts you want. (not sure about whats in that flower vase material but it might yellow when its exposed to the sun for a while)
regular crystal clear resin has inhibitors in it to slow/stop this from happening.

typically there is tons of stuff on ebay for this
or check out alumilites site for info/materials.

We have used alumilites stuff to make prototypes of molded parts at work with no problems. depending on the material it helps to prewarm the mold in an oven because most casting resins are heat set.

Success!! I just finished my first 2 illuminated keyhole rings. I got some of that clear casting resin from Hobby Lobby and some clay molding stuff, they didn't have any of the silicone kind. Works great, and turned out better than I expected for my first experience with this type of project. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Sorry for the bad pics, had to use my cellphone, but you can pretty much see what's going on. They disperse the light from the leds very well, now I just need to get a ring from a pass. side handle to make molds of.
