when I try to datalog my friends 1991 GST it smells like burning paper from the ECU, I check the caps and all 3 seemed fine. Does this mean the ECU is gone? It use to start before and run for a while now it won't start at all

What cable are you using?
If it only does it when you try to datalog, It may be the cable is shorting out something In the ECU.
Are you sure youre hooking up the cable to the Diagnostic port correctly?

Bad ECU caps smell like dead fish, not burning paper.

I'm using this cable

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43989&item=2482470316&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

I don't have to wire it in just plug n play

Have you logged any other cars with the cable? It sounds like its shorting something out.

FIXED

Me and my buddy went to a junkyard and got a ECU from a 92-94 Tsi, we put it in and the GST runs mint, no bogging or jumpy idle YAY.

50 dollar fix
