#5199, "Auto to manual swap into my 91 SOHC Galant??"

Is this possible to do? The auto trans I have has 180,000+ miles on it, and finding a better one or rebuilding it seems either difficult or very expensive. Is there a specific manual trans that will fit this car, or will any 5spd DSM 1st gen trans fit up? Anyone haver any info for me?

Does anyone know if a 1st gen Galant ever came with a 5sp? Other than the AWD turbo models of course..

That is a very good question. I have no idea.

Is the SOHC engine in the Galant the 4G37 like the 1.8L DSMs? Or is it a SOHC 4G63 2.0L? I am sure either of those will work depending on the engine in your car.

I'm poking around on google and I'm finding that the 89-92 Galants came with the 4G63 2.0L 8valve SOHC.

Edit: dur. I remember run4cvr telling me he was under the hood of one a while ago and saw 4G63 stamped on the block and got confused when he saw the SOHC head.

Yeah, its the SOHC 8 valve, 4G63 motor, its stamped "4G63" right on the firewall It says I have the F4A22 auto transmission, and from the digging I have done, the F5M22 manual trans is the 5 spd option, i *think*. From what I could find out, all the N/T 90-94 DSM FWD cars use the F5M22 5 spd trans. This means all the 5 spd's from all 90-94 talons, eclispe, lasers,- all the non turbo FWD ones, could work in the Galant..i think haha..I spent almost 2 hours on Google, and still have not yet found any real solid info as to if the 1st gen Galant NT came wiht a 5 spd option. I did find one site that said the base model came wiht a 5 spd, in the 91 model year that I have, so i don't know..I do have a co-worker that knows a guy who may be able to rebuild my auto trans on the side for a really good price, so i may go that route. Hell, I found a master rebuild kit on the net for my auto, for like 250 bucks.. Oh yeah, this motor has 102 HP! yeahhh boyee!
