The tranny is whining pretty loud when in any gear, more prominent in 2,3,4,5 but still there in 1st... in neutral coasting or parked, no noise, putting it in gear though, even when coasting, you can hear whining, but accelerating any little bit causes the whining to become louder. It is the same loud whine whether your at 10% throttle or 100%.

This is my factory bellhousing. The guts are from a neon, and i have a Quaife LSD. The swap was assembled by a good tranny man about 2 years ago. CM STG 4 modular clutch, stock axles, correct tranny fluid type. I seemed to notice this whining awhile back, but just recently I noticed it was louder. I havent checked the fluid level yet, but it doesnt leak oil where it sleeps.

What's the deal?

Low on fluid. Small 1/2 inch spot between the mating surface of the bellhousing and case is seeping fluid out over time I guess. Its on the very bottom of the tranny where the diff sits.

Think I could use some hardening RTV or JB Weld temporarily until I get time to pull the tranny? I was planning on draining out what fluid it has left in it, cleaning the surfaces up, scuff it a little, then put some jb weld on good and see if it will bond to the surface.

Well, I went to drain the rest of the fluid left after finding a leak, and I drained 2 quarts out, WTF. It had somewhat of a metallic look in the sunlight, but there was no noticeable granular feel or anything.

SO, I put 2 quarts of fresh fluid in and still have the same tranny whine. Don't know how to describe it other than maybe like the sound of the differential scraping the case of the transmission every revolution. Or one of the cone bearing on the diff seized up, I don't know.

What is that access panel on the drive side of the tranny for? Anything worth trying before I pull it out and take it to a shop? All gears work and shift smooth as butter. All that is present is an annoying noise under any bit of acceleration in any gear (more prominent in 2nd-5th).

Yea, basically. The trans fluid didnt look too bad. A little darker than I thought it would be for a year old, but not bad. But in the sunlight, you could see a metallic haze to it, nothing granular that you could feel, but just a shimmer in the sunlight...

Like I said, performance is not hindered at all, everything feels great, I just hear a whining under any level of acceleration. It is pretty loud, loud enough I am not gonna drive it anymore till I can figure out what it is so I dont cause any more damage.

After Daisy blew up the first time, we found her leaking and she started to make noise on me. The output shaft roller bearing fell apart. When we drained the fluid, it had a definite shimmer to it. Like a pearlescent glitter. I agree. It did not have any sort of gritty feeling to it, but it was definitely scarey.

I get some noise myself these days, but only in 5th gear, low rpm (~2000) when maintaining speed. I can't hear it over my exhaust at higher speeds, but then again, I wouldn't hear an F16 right behind me, she's so loud. It's fairly faint in my case. I will check the fluid myself and see where mine is, but she doesn't seem to be leaking any trans fluid.

Guess I'm just curious about this like you are. I have pictures of my last tranny pull hosted and there is a link in a thread in here somewhere to them. I know I took a pic of the shimmering fluid.

Good luck to you, sir.

If I had to give it a paint-style name, I'd call it pearlescent shit.

Congradumalations!

I have the time, but not the budget or desire to get that intimate with the tranny in that car for a long time.
