Why do people replace the stock tranny with the 3.55 ratio one out of the SOHC neons? With a lower ratio, you loose acceleration and gain top end, but who needs that much more top end? Also will this throw off the speedo, or does the speedo gear on the diff correct for this? I am looking for a new tranny for my car, I need a new clutch also. I figure while I am at it I will put in a LSD and possibly a short shifter. If anyone has any of these parts that they want to sell, know where I can get cheap, or even recomendations please let me know.

Thanks,

Andy

The 3.55 ring gear is geometrically stronger than the 3.94 ring gear. The swap is primarily for high-HP cars, as the taller gears actually help in loading up the motor (more boost sooner) and they also help get it to the ground (taller gears make the car less liable to rip tire all the time). On a bolted NA or low-boost car, i wouldn't do it.

Ok, thanks for the info and the advice. I have been having trouble finding any good info and advice. I actually just purchased a used NV-T350 on ebay, it is the standard GS model. I was looking into putting the taller 5th gear(0.72) into the tranny, but keeping the final drive at 3.94. The 96-99 DOHC(Non-ACR&RT) Neons came with a 3.94 trannny with a 0.72 5th gear. I think the taller 5th gear would really be nice for cruising down highway. Can you let me know if you know of anyone doing this swap.

Thanks,

Andy

You need to find out if it is from a SOHC or DOHC car. Also if it was in an ACR or RT model. There is a posting somewhere on the forum with all the specific gear ratios for the transmissions put in all the neons according to year, model, and engine.
