#438, "Was I suppose to beat a 150 HP Mustang?"

After school I raced my friends 96 auto basic mustang with 150 Hp. We were both travling at 40mph and had a rolling start I was beating him up until we reached 70mph, then he passed me up. Im thinkin I was doing sumthing wrong. While we were at 40mph I had it in 4th and when we took off I downshifted to 3rd and I was in 3rd for the rest of the race and we got up and over 70mph, my rpm meter was goin up so slow, I was waiting till it got between 6-7 to shift so I could use all of 3rd gear, is it good to use all of the gear or should I have shifted into 4th earlier?

if you were going 40 you should've dropped to 2nd, 2nd goes up to about 60 or so.

Yup second goes to almost 65 mph then take 3rd to 90mph at 7000 rpm or to 100 mph at 7200 rpm.

Yup, just know in each gear where the MPH and RPM match up. 1st gear redline is about 40mph, 2nd gear redline is about 65 mph 3rd gear redline is 95 mph 4th gear redlines about 120 and I can't get 5th gear to redline.

You cant get 5th gear to redline because of the govener, there is a get rid of the govener but you have to make sure you have Z-rated tires.

Ok, I replied to this in another post, but oh well. There is no governor on the 95-99 nonturbo Eclipse/Talon. Nada. None. =o) That mod is for the 4G63 powered turbo car. They reason they have the speed limiter is because the tires on a stock GS-T were H rated. GSXs come with Z rated tires, and therefore dont have a speed limiter.

Actually, you shouldve beaten that Mustang if youre driving your car properly. Then again, I'm not sure. I know the GS Sport is a good bit heavier than my RS. Based on the weight of an RS, stock for stock, an RS should win. Mustang = 150hp at the fly, RWD so figure in a 20% drivetrain loss and 3150lbs or so. RS = 140hp at the fly, FWD so figure in about a 15% loss, though I've heard 18% and 2850lbs or so. So, based on weight and power, the Eclipse should win, if driven properly. Also, when going 40mph, I've always found its great to blip the throttle and downshift to 2nd. I love going from a 40mph roll. Downshift, grab second, chirp the tires and tear off. Only going to 3rd definitely hurt you.
