99925, my brand new motor drove well for about 2 1/2 hours Posted by 96eclipserst, May-02-07 07:53 PM
Hey, I'm having a major pain in the ass with my eclipse. I just had a brand new motor put in(420a), with eagle rods, JE pistons, and a nice turbo kit consisting of a garrett t3 turbo, walbro 255l fuel pump 36lb accel injectors, big ass front mount intercooler, tial 38mm wastegate with external (open) dump pipe, as well as an apexi NEO tuner ...i repeat this engine and everything in it is brand new.... however, about 2 1/2 hours into my ride home it began bogging out a bit... losing "push" by the time i got off the highway at my house i got a nice loud ass backfire accompanied by a lil bit of smoke.... the car shut off at the gas station, plugs were fouled i cleaned them off and the car ran fine... except now it has a very very low unstable idol, high vibrations (due to the low ass rpms does not vibrate when throttle is applied) , and just about no torque at all.... im guessing the guy who tuned it didn't know wtf he was doing and/or the timing belt skipped a tooth.... please help me i want my car back it's been sitting at my other house for about 5 months already can someone tell me what's wrong? i wanna get this beast on the street and fry us some honda!

Could be running VERY rich. If the tuner thought that he could tune with the apexi then you need to take it back to him. You can't add fuel with the safc because of the "fix" for the map sensor. But it sounds like your running rich and/or spark is weak. I don't know, maybe someone else will chime in.

Welcome to the site.
So you have a neo, 36# injectors, and a walbro as your entire fuel setup? If so that's most likely where your problem is. With SAFC's fuel delivery can only be altered when not in boost on our cars. Also, there's nothing in your post saying you have anything to raise fuel pressure when in boost. You need to use a Vortech SFMU, with that you can set the idle fuel pressure to where it needs to be (stock is around 45psi, you are going to want somewhere around 20psi) I can almost guarantee that when you're not in boost it's running way too rich and when you are in boost, off the top of my head IDK. Do a search for SFMU setups, and you will find a couple good threads in which people post what disc/ring combo they are using as well as what their idle and static fuel pressure are in boost.
Also, do you have a Missing Link or a FCD to fool your map sensor into not seeing boost? What kind of gauges do you have? I suggest a wideband to help you out with the tuning for your fuel delivery.

thanks, actually.... now that i look at it.. the dumb son of a bitch didn't put in an fmu .... and there is nothing to fool the map sensor.... so yea i don't udnerstand why it would run 2 hours or so without a problem though... when i picked the car up... it was absolutely fine. it took some time to get that messed up.... you think i need to replace the stock ecu? or does 420a ecu's handle this boost thing decently.... i noticed it says you have a 96 rs? which is the same EXACT thing as me... so... if imma listen to any1 it will be you, thanks man.

thank you... i appreciate your help a lot... it is indeed running rich.... actually my fathers hemi durango got better mileage than i did on the ride home LOL! i was basically on "E" and he still had 1/4 tank.

Did your turbo kit come from a reputable source or did you peice one together? It sounds like you had it professionally installed. Did you?

Don't waste money on a fmu, go with a sfmu, unless you are going to switch to MSnS or Portfueler in the near future. There are a few SFMU's running around just have to keep looking for them in the classifieds and on ebay. You also need a missing link or FCD. I would go with the fcd because you might the early fuel system design and its just better than the missing link, imo. There are a few members that sale the fcd, again look in the classifieds for them. You can still keep the Neo but it would only do you any good when you are out of boost as ^ said before. It could help you lean out large injectors for a decent idle but thats about it.
