99906, 420a turbo build Posted by MadRS, May-01-07 06:06 AM
in general, what would it take to run 15-18 psi
What pistons should i go with, and if i just get the rods shot peened will they hold up?
what bore and compression would be best for my goal? and how much porting will need to be done to the head?
also, what other head work should i look at, any recomendations for valves, springs, or cams?
Thanks for the help.

First off, welcome to the sight
Secondly, there are so many different answers/options, to respond to your questions with, that you aren't just going to get one answer that everyone agrees with and says is exactly what you should do. Like Mike said, the search button is your friend, do a few searches on these things, spend hours (yes hours even days) reading up on this stuff and then you will know what your choices are and be able to make decisions based on what you are trying to accomplish. You'll be able to decide if you want to do headwork or get new rods instead of using the stockers based upon looking at all the positives and negatives of everything

it took me about a year of reading information posted up on here before having the confidence to under go a rebuild

to answer your questions directly

It is recommended that you get forged internals before boosting past 7 or 8 psi. There are cases of motors surviving around 10 psi consistantly but almost exclusivley using a somewhat sifisticated fuel setup (which I would recommend for anything running 12 psi or more) Search for: bottom end rebuild 8 inj setup, port fueler and/or MSnS/ megasquirt
Originally posted by MadRS What pistons should i go with
I'm not the one to ask about piston brands, haven't bought aftermarket (yet)
Originally posted by MadRS and if i just get the rods shot peened will they hold up?
I dont know what that is, I read this site alot, so I bet not. (you better do a searh on it)
Originally posted by MadRS what bore and compression would be best for my goal?
Look this up I cant remember
Originally posted by MadRS how much porting will need to be done to the head?
You dont have to port out the head to physically turbo your motor, but it is one of those things that will be worth more the more you turn up boost. I would recommend it. You could always go the half way and do like me. I had the exhaust ports machined larger, and I polished the texture out of the intake ports.

all recomended none required. you should research the benefits of these, also add to that adjustable cam gears
of course these are only recomendations based on my research and experiences.

Originally posted by MadRS What pistons should i go with Your two most common choices are Wiseco or JE Pistons. I personally plan to go with 8.8:1 ratio JE Pistons when I ever get to rebuilding.*
Originally posted by MadRS and if i just get the rods shot peened will they hold up? I also don't know for sure about this one (as I never wondered), but most people usually replace the rods with forged pieces while they are in there anyways for piece of mind.*
Originally posted by MadRS what bore and compression would be best for my goal? I usually see people using 8.8:1 or 8.6:1 compression pistons for a turbo rebuild with a .020 overbore.*
*I admit I'm not too keen on engine rebuilding yet as I haven't researched it myself, this is just info I can remember from reading other people's threads. If my info is wrong, please someone clarify.

Fair enough, though I personally had an easier time grasping the concept of adjusting pulse width over fuel pressure. Seems like adjusting fuel pressure to get it tuned was going to be a headache. Guess that's why I'm still NA.:P
So you see MadRS there are many options and for each his own. Good luck with your project.:thumbsup
