Is it worth the money and time throwing a turbo on a stock 420a with 85k miles??? I have all the parts but dont know if i want to complete this project on a stock engine. Im not going to re-build it because of $$ and most likely I'll sell all my parts and buy a motorcycle. Someone convince me to boost my car...I was soo excited at first when piecing together a kit and now it just seems like a waste if the car will prob crap out in a year or 2 or possibly sooner.

-Will I really be happy with 5-7 psi??
-How much wear and tear does that ammount of boost give the 420a?
-Should I just get the bike and build an eclipse in the future when I have the proper ammount of $$??

Throw some honest opinions at me.

Not on a stock Engine it's not a good idea. If you can't do it right then don't do it at all. IMO

Only for so long, then you will want more :).

IMO if you are going to turbo your 420a without rebuilding you always have to be planning on rebuilding in the somewhat near future. If you're not comfortable with the idea of that or can't afford the down time or the cost of a rebuild, then this may not be the thing for you.

I am not trying to turn you away from it, it's good to see new guys getting excited about turboing their 420a. It's definetly a great learning experience and has made me enjoy my eclipse so much more than I did prior to having those few pounds of boost. I can't say I've ever regretted doing it, maybe a few choices I made along the way could have been better, but I have never looked back and said 'I never should have boosted this car' The extra enjoyment I've gotten out of the car was definetly worth the cost to me.

Jeez I didn't see the part about so little boost (thought it was part of his sig lol).

Yeah, such little boost would only make a hona guy happy. lol

there have been cars that have lasted 3+years on these boost levels. More often than not though it seems people's engines go b/c they get boost happy or the car isn't tuned properly (too much boost not enough fuel, etc.) or the engine just wasn't in the condition to be boosted in the first place.

I've also heard of two weeks, but neither is normal unless you do something stupid. there are plenty of instances of stock bottom end 420A's lasting many years on this forum alone, and probably more elsewhere (asog, asec, neons.org)

I know a guy who has been boosted on stock internals for almost 3 years now and it runs perfectly fine. I am at about 2 months or so now and car is running fine. Just make sure you do the install right and you shouldn't have anything to worry about if you don't overboost.

My stock talon was boosted at 6psi for 3 years before i converted it back to stock and transferred the kit into my silver Eclipse. The motor ran great for another 2 years until I sold the motor to another member.

If you want it reliable, Take care of it and keep maintenance up to date.

Install an HRC kit on a stock engine. Keep the boost at a safe level (5-7psi). Keep up on the maintenance on the thing. It willlast a good long time and you'll have fun doing it.

I've known people to make it over a year and a half on 10psi stock bttom end before they popped it. It's all in the tuning and maintenance.

I always take good care of my car reguardless what it is or whats done to it. I used to be heavy footed but I'm not really into doing all that anymore...I shelled the tranny once and ruined the clutch once and that was enough for me, since then I've turned into a show winning car now I'm turboing it because thats what I want not because its going to make it more powerful or faster....I think its funny when everyone wants me to race and I dont ever get on it or anything...they get mad and talk shit....but when it all comes down to it my car is still nice the way it was when I finished it and theirs well...cant quite say the same in most cases.

I boosted my eclipse and found myself removing the kit 6 months later. I wanted more boost badly but wasnt ready to rebuild the engine. Would I have never turbo'd it if I could go back? Never, I loved installing it, getting the feeling of accomplishment, and it was a whole different car after 3600 rpm. ;-) ( I also got a great deal on a hahn kit). It sounds like you have the right idea, just do it right and you wont have any problems, my car ran fine.

Oh believe me...ask anyone that tries to race me at a redlight...I accept the challenge and put the car in gear...Stall it up to about 4000 as they stall it up-anxiously watching the red light- waiting silently but loud for the green...a beed of sweat runs from my forehead to my cheek then the light turns green...the other guy gets the lead as I stall the car out until it almost dies and rolls across the intersection cracking up because they thought I would actually race them. HAHA I love it. There goes those expensive tires they just bought...along with a ticket from the cop that was either just behind the guy in the turck behind him or at the 7/11 across the street...as I cruise by still cracking up

I've been boosted for almost a year now and I have 144K miles on my baby. Its all in the setup. Don't skimp, research your butt off, and be responsible with it and you'll be fine.

I have been boosted for 2 years 10psi (sometimes spike to 13psi }( ) stock internals 150K miles and my baby still running like a champ :thumbsup thanks to 2GNT TEAM.

I'm feeling the motivation to turbo my 1995 GS. 107k on the clock. Great thread.

x2 My turbo project has been off and on for 2+ years and its threads like this that keep me from quitting.

Also considering giving it a little more balls though by just adding a bigger stall.

I absolutely recommend it...just be smart and safe about the decisions you make, Do it right the first time and dont shorthand it.If you are going to do it go all out. and remember kids you get what you pay for.

Its the best mod you can do. I am auto and the car was damn slow before now with the turbo at 6-7 psi im loving it again. If your car is in great shape (body, interior...) and you love the way it look and for sure got some money DO IT! 2000 miles without any problem but im now rebuilt cause I want more boost ;p

What turbo are you using? And what rpm does it begin to spool so that it noticeably adds power? I'd be happier to add a lower amount of HP but add it throughout the powerband since this car is my daily driver. It sounds much better than making it spool high in the range. I've already got a much faster car than I could ever make this Eclipse, so I want this to just be more driveable. Turbo and torque converter and tranny cooler sound good? I think so!

At this time I only have a shift kit. (Tranny was rebuilted 2 years ago but with std parts)

Im using the hahn s16g and boost start around 3k rpm. I can drive it like normal and it will be fast when I want I love it. I see 7psi when I hit 4500-4800
