99614, Which Turbo Timer? Posted by totaleclipse_05, Mar-31-07 03:44 PM
Hey guys,
I am torn between either the Greddy, HKS, or Apexi ones. I did a little searching, but all of them I found, I couldn't really get a clear answer. Not to mention all of them were from like 2002-2003 haha. I guess I am wondering what turbo timer do you recommend and why?

my friend had a Greddy on his 2g 6 bolt swap car , and it was annoying as hell, the beeping was really high pitched and annoying

Really? I didn't know that the Greddy made beeping noises. I kind of want the Greddy or HKS because I could mount it above the steering column, but if the Apexi has great enough features to overlook it's size, I might go with that. Thing is, I wouldn't know where to mount it.

Personally I have the Blitz DTT, not the one with the little penlike display that you can easily mount on the steering column, but the older one. Anyways I like it, it has a boost sensor with peak/hold and I use it as a boost gauge, plus you can set boost warnings on it (which has saved me several times) If boost starts creeping past a set level, then it beeps and I let off the gas. The only thing I don't like is that it's not in psi but in bar's so it took a while to learn to convert in my head.

I'll have to do a little research on that one. Didn't know that was a good option, thanks.
Anyone else? Opinions on their turbo timers?

I use a greddy because it matches my boost controller and the screen is a nice color. I had the original HKS only because that matched my boost controller when I had an HKS.
My greddy has never made a noise.

I use the HKS Type-1 and i love it, easy and intuitive to install and set up, plus i has some nice extras to play with

I'll call him, but im pretty sure it was a greddy, he mounted it in the space where the ash tray sits, it fits perfectly in there

I use the apexi tt and mounted it on the guage cluster. It's a good unit and has a volt meter and af ratio and 02 voltage capability. The O2 voltage came in real handy before the MS and WBO2 to watch for .93 in boost. I'm sure I could claibrate it to the wb I have but I have the zeitronix with display so I don't really need that function any more. It has auto timer and standard flat time. This is where I mounted mine:

They're all the same and do that same thing. *shrug* Go with what's cheapest.

99628, RE: Which Turbo Timer? Posted by totaleclipse_05, Apr-02-07 08:45 AM
Do they make like a bracket or something to mount the Apexi unit in the DIN slot? I tried doing a little searching, but couldn't find anything. If they do, I will probably go with that one. If they don't, I'll probably go with the GReddy one since it's cheaper than the HKS one.

I guerrila glued mine to the top of that little cubby under the radio, :dunno: sure it's not the easiest spot to read it if you're using it for other features, but it's not horrible either. A few drops and it hasn't moved even after sitting in some crazy heat with the windows up. Just drilled a little hole in the back for the wires. You can't see the wires and there's still room to put cd's and stuff underneath the TT :)

You have a pic at all of what it looks like?

I actually don't, but if I remember I'll take one for you when I go home this weekend

Alright that would be awesome, TIA.
Once I get paid on thursday I will probably purchase one. I think it's either the Apexi or GReddy. I'll try to decide and let everyone know. Thanks for all your opinions on this guys.

I guess I have another question. For the guy's who have the Apexi turbo timer, is it a pain to hook up the O2 sensor voltage and A/F ratio part of it? Or is just like a single wire running from the O2 wire to it?

That is exactly it. Just take one wire to the corresponding pin on the ecu. It was a very valuable resource before I was running a WB. If you are not currently, or planning very soon to be on a WBO2 then this will be a great tuning option for you. When I was watching O2 voltage before the WB I could easily glance and look for the .93 while watching my egt's for danger. It uses the regular greddy style harness for install, then run the O2 and ground wire and you are done. If you already have a WB and do not need this function then buy whatever TT you want. The O2 option was the only reason I went with the apexi unit back then.

Does the Apexi unit require a wire for the handbrake as well? I was doing some searching on the other units and I read they need a wire on the handbrake to function.

Yes that is the ground. This has a 2 wire hook up run one to the ECU the other to the brake, then you are done.

I really like my Apexi TT, but I have no experience with any other one. The voltage display is nice, it shows the analog out from my WBO2. And yes, It will display up to 5v although it's only made for 0-1v.

Alright guys, I just placed my order tonight at Extremepsi for my turbo timer and I decided to go with the GReddy unit. It will be easy to mount IMO and it should do what I need it to do (idle the car haha) for cheaper than the other ones. Thanks for everyone's opinions on this, it was a hard decision for me to choose haha.

Pics of where I mounted mine as promised...
First two pics are the view from the drivers seat (1st I'm in neutral, 2nd I've got it in 4th)

That's a pretty clean setup you have there. TT should come in tomorrow so I'll see what I can do for mounting solutions.

99689, RE: Which Turbo Timer? Posted by totaleclipse_05, Apr-09-07 01:11 PM
OK guys, I have the TT hooked up, but the e-brake wire isn't working. I read the instructions and it said to splice the brown wire included into the e-brake wire and I did and it still doesn't recognize it and keeps beeping saying to put the e-brake up. Anyone else have this problem? It's for the GReddy TT.

99693, RE: Which Turbo Timer? Posted by totaleclipse_05, Apr-09-07 03:06 PM
UPDATE,
OK, I start the car and am going to test it. Switch it off and the TT counts down, but the car only stays running for about 1 sec and dies. TT continues to count down. I have everything hooked up with the GReddy harness, but will not run the car. On my harness I also have 1 green, 1 red, and 1 white wire that have a butt connector on it and has a plastic sleeve wrapped around it, but not hooked up to anything. I've been searching for about an hour or two and I don't think I have to worry about those because they have never been brought up in any other threads. Can anybody help me out? This is driving me nuts :(
EDIT/UPDATE
I figured out that the car still runs when I switch it to the ACC setting, but once I turn the key all the way off like I'm going to remove it, the car dies within a couple seconds, but the TT keeps counting down.

99697, RE: Which Turbo Timer? Posted by cs82685, Apr-09-07 04:35 PM
This may sound silly, but how long is the car on before you are testing it for? If I basically just start my car up and then turn it off, sometimes everything shuts right down, sometimes the tt will stay on counting but the car will shut. If you are just starting it and then shutting it right away that may be the problem. Another silly thing, How long is the timer set to count down for?

99698, RE: Which Turbo Timer? Posted by totaleclipse_05, Apr-09-07 04:44 PM
I let it idle for a few minutes to warm up and then shut it off. Didn't change compared to if I turned it on and then 10 sec later, turned it off.
I've altered the time it counts down from 10 seconds to 2 min and the car shuts down (like slowly dies, doesn't just shut down).
I've been doing a lot of research and thinking maybe it's my harness. It's a GReddy harness and I found this thread:
http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=8&topic_id=52531&mesg_id=52531&listing_type=search
and Ryan was having the similar problems as to what I am having. He said he re-did the wiring of his harness because they were all mixed up, but he didn't say which wires were. I don't know what to do now. This irritates me that my harness could be my problem as I bought it to avoid problems.

99699, RE: Which Turbo Timer? Posted by totaleclipse_05, Apr-09-07 05:31 PM
OK, I drew up a crude picture of what my stock harness that plugged into the ignition harness has for wire colors and the second part is where the harness taps the timer's wires into the other side. I don't know what wire colors mean what for the stock harness so I don't know if the timer's wires are spliced into the correct ones.

Jack_of_trades posted this in another thread:
Constant 12v+ = WHITE Accessory = BLUE Ignition #1 = BLACK/WHITE Ignition #2 = BLUE/BLACK Neutral Safety = BLACK/YELLOW (don't know if this one is needed)
But I don't have a solid blue wire or a black/yellow wire on the original harness. Are these correct names for the wiring?
On the GReddy website, they state the RED wires is 12V CONSTANT, GREEN is ON (Ignition Power), and BLUE to ACC. They also say on vehicles with the 2 ignition wires (which I think is what we have) to connect the GREEN wire to the ignition (ON) which doesn't drop voltage when the starter is activated and connect the BLUE wire to the other ignition wire. I tried swapping both the GREEN and the BLUE wires with each other, but it didn't change anything. As far as I know, the wiring could be correct, but does anybody know for sure?

Nobody has any ideas? I contacted ExtremePSI about it and asked them if I possibly had a defected one and awaiting a response.
