98902, Another Intercooler question
Posted by ChloRure, Jan-19-07 04:21 PM
Next season is in 2 months so i'm already planning on what to buy. Right now im running a 2g smic with custom "ABS" piping... was cheap on that. My major upgrade will be to kick that BS HRC downpipe that came with the kit and put a 3" downpipe and a new IC. Im not sure if I want to spend around 800$ for a HRC fmic. Im running 8psi max and if I rebuilt the engine later... probably 15-16 psi max. Some ppl sell hrc smic with piping for a good price, do you thi it will perform well for my application ? Is the fmic will be MUCH better... or I can buy the smic and save for a full 3" exhaust... will the gain be better with exhaust than fmic. Just dont realy know where to spend money in first. For what I remember my egt was pretty high near 6-7 psi...

Thanks

If you don't mind having to piece together the piping on your own, a lot of people have used the ebay intercooler kits with success. You can have a nice setup for just a few hundred dollars. Most of them even come with warranties

I would prefer to use prefab piping but can also takes some time and fab them. But what is the first mod to do between exhaust and IC.

Going with a FMIC on that low of boost has shown to hinder performance more than it helps on the HRC kits. Upgrading to either a Supra SMIC or the HRC SMIC will both do the job very well, up to around 450hp on the HRC unit. Even the HRC site doesn't recommend going with the FMIC with the size setup you are running.

So it would be a good choice to buy a hrc smic with some ducking to flow more air and get 3" full exhaust. Maybe later if I rebuilt and run higher boost I will sell the smic and buy bigger. I was just not really impressed with my actual setup. Btw im running stock exhaust...

The HRC FMIC for our cars is only 600.00. H IC 1211 is the P/N. The 1200 model comes with piping for a 4g63 car and its 899.00.

I've known people to run two DSM SMICs, one right in front of the other in the fenderwell, as an inexpensive (what, $50?) upgrade. I would suggest, however, that before you upgrade anything more than the piping to the IC you've got right now, you consider using the money for forged internals. Just buy your pistons right now or something.

If you *have* to have a front mount and are running low boost like that, keep your eyes peeled for smaller, inexpensive FMICS like the Starion or SRT4.

Oh and at 600$ does it include pipe ?

Going to a 3" DP will aid in spooling and free up some HP so it wouldn't be money wasted. Honestly, what are your air intake temps? I run a 2G smic at 8psi and its generally cools my intake charge at around a 70-75% efficiency. Using a datalogger is best for monitoring your air intake temps. Maybe you'd be better off getting better IC piping, the 3" DP and making an air duct for your SMIC to help direct more cool air through it.

I'm gonna go with another eBay FMIC for my next turbo setup. Just a little one this time. Like 5-7 in. tall.
