98641, Mitsu Flanged turbo question Posted by Slo2g, Dec-21-06 04:36 PM
I am looking into getting a new turbo becaue my plans have changed from when I started buying parts. I now have, but not installed, forged pistons and rods, howell top end performance kit with crane 12s, and ofe southbend clutch. I want a ball bearing but I didn't think they made any with a mitsu flange. Is this true? The 20g is nice but for the price I would rather go ahead and get a bb. Please help. Thanks.

Why do you even want/need ball bearing? Off the top of my head I can not think of Mitsu flanged bb turbos. I would think with a FWD car, the longer spool time would actually be a saving grace, allowing you to maybe have some traction vs roasting the tires as soon as boost hits. There are many other turo's out there that are bb, but I guess it depends on what your goals are. A 20g is a good sized turbo that will make a lot of power with a proper setup.

Forced Performance has BB turbos with a custom stainless steel mitsu-flanged turbine housing.

you can sometimes get a good deal on a used HKS GT2530 if ya search some of the Skyline / Silvia forums similar to the garrett 2830 but with a higher pricepoint (new = $2200) its avaliable in a t25 and a t3, and the exhaust housings can be bought seperatly for when you want to move up to a t3 manifold
the 20g is a nice turbo and all this depends on you performance goals

The reason I want a bb is the same as anybody else, faster spool. Yes I know that I will have to watch the throttle more than a regular tubo. I cant see paying 1000 for a 20g if I really want a bb. I think I am just going to go with the Evo III 16g for now untill I get a better suspension set up with some wider tires because I am on the stock 14s.

Not really a point. You're talking 500 RPM's difference in most cases and you're going to have to plumb water lines for. Save yourself the headache, money and time and go the traditional route.

Running water lines is not hard, and it may only be 500 rpms on bottom, but the turbo will be more efficient in upper rpms as well.

No, it's not brain surgery however does that justify the price jump for a ball bearing turbo? In most cases it does not.

If you do go with it (Evo III), it is absolutely the best street turbo for a 2.0l out there. It is all you need for a daily driver. I ran mine at 23 PSI daily (305+ AWHP) and loved every minute of it. It has gotten many cars deep into the 11's, but the 16g housings let it spool not too much later than a t25. You won't be disappointed!

Like everyone says its all on your final goal.
I just got a mild tune with a 20g and megasquirt running fuel only no spark at 19psi and put down 289whp on pump gas.
I use to run the s16g and it hit boost so fast I would just spin tire all the way through first and second and this was only at 8psi.
A 20g and a 3.55 trans is a pretty decent street/mild track setup...IMO of course!
But do what you want and what will make you happy.
