im not sure which forum this fits in.. i, going stg 3 looking for ~300 hp or so aka w/e 18~20 psi affords me..haha and i want to do a 3.55 gear mod and while im in there, would i benefit enuf to buy a qualife lsd or will stock suit my hp range?? or since its stg 3 and i dont really hardcore auto cross, i shiould go with somthin liek phantom grip or (dare i say) OBX? even tho it seems to be a tranny grenade..

Remember what the LSD does, it transfers power so that you can get power out to both wheels instead of just one. If your question is "will the Quaife take 300whp?" No problem. Will the Phantom grip or OBX be able to do it? I wouldn't bet my tranny on it. Feel free to search out those two to see the problems. The ERT LSD retrofit should be able to handle the power also (keeping in mind that it's usually the torque that breaks stuff).

I think what you want to ask yourself is what are your goals? Are you looking to 1/4 mile? You say you aren't looking to really hardcore autocross. Does that mean you plan on racing a little? Does the cost difference justify the Quaife? Or can you live with the little bit more slip that you might get with the ERT?

The stage 3 part is kind of made up by the companies. I went with your goal of 300whp.

Oh yeah, I suspect that Terry (or somebody) will move this into the Manual Tranny area, so look for it there.

good luck,

i understand that it wil take that power, but with that hp goal, im not entierly sure its worth dropping another 15oo. i dontplan on autox, its kinda a weekend driver and yes i lan on racing and doing the 1/4 mile. the main reason i wanted the qualife is b/c its the best, and ive searched and it seems the rest are clutch type like the PG, and the retro fit. and well the obx... idk that one looks like a bad knock off even tho the neon and honda guys wil swear by it. from what ive read i would see a differance in power since both wheels are applyng power but do i need alot of power to make this thing really perform?

Yeah, $1500 is a lot, lol! I would love one, but can't afford it. But then again, the ERT works fine for what I am pushing (170whp and 142 tq). I seem to recollect the Neon guys would maybe weld the pin or something like that for the PG (damn I didn't read it all that well). IMO the ERT would do you just fine. I'm laying down posi strips with mine.

Crap gotta run to work!

No, you don't need a quaife at 300hp. Both wheels will spin just fine.

If you're planning on going into competition then it's a consideration, but the money would be much better spent on a portfueler or suspension.

There's also a Retrofit LSD which is cheaper than the Quaife, search for details on that.

Just because you use slicks, does not mean that you have no traction issues. The quick "street" way to check would be to make a couple of short "hole shot strips" and then read the strips. First are they "posi strips"? Are they equal width? Are they equal length?

This will give you a general idea of how your power is being transfered. Obviously at the strip you have different variables.

If you are laying down posi strips without an LSD then chances are you have your "points" weighted just right. When I first started with the NA, I was laying down posi strips pretty nicely on my 18's. As I changed things (added power, lost weight, changed stock pieces to HP pieces etc.) I lost those strips (oh, I have since added the ERT LSD). I believe that if I was able to find a scale that would allow me to weigh my corners (or points) I could have that much more traction. But that takes a bit of back and forth and time (I gotta get me a scale ;)).

Also, as you probably know, there are many other things that are involved in getting the power to the tar (clutch and PP, ssupension set-up, tire size, tire type, tire pressure...etc).

Eh, just food for thought,

Good luck running 18-20 psi on a weekend driver without breaking stuff all the time. I hope you have a fuel system to support that.

I agree with the other guys here, I can't see spending that kind of money on the Quaife. I have the Retrofit LSD from ERT. Works great. I love it. I would HIGLY recommend getting a second diff though b/c the time it took ERT to get mine back to me was almost 3-4 months. I was involved in the intial group buy back in '03. I lost almost the whole summer. So, plan, plan, and plan some more on how to go about it.

If you're going to have your transmission out for a clutch replacement, and you have the funds avaiable, definately go for a Quaife. I never drove a FWD car with a real differential, but I heard from Murix that the Quaife was definately worth it. Even if you are still NA, it's still probably worth it, especially for cornering and the winter time if you drive your car in the snow/ice.
