98232, is it possible to do this?
Posted by barza21, Nov-14-06 05:54 PM
i have be reading a decent amount in this site, and by reading i have started thinking: is it possible to twin turbo an eclipse? ignore the fact of money, and just think about it, i have a digram in my head of the way the turbos should be placed and connected but i dont know if if the engine would support it.
what do u guys think, is it dumb, has it been given some thought before?

It would work but be completely useless. Just use a single turbo.

Do it.
Its would be just like a twin turbo on any car..
There are benefits.. there are downsides..

If you want proven power then stick with the hahn single turbo kits

When rx'7s want 600+ hp they swap the twins in favour of a big single fucker, like my friend here. ;)

You could always use two little GT15's ;)

Space is at a huge premium in a FWD engine layout so something like that wouldn't really work but if you got the time, money and, most of all, will to do it then I personally think it would be kinda cool.

What about if you use them like stepping stones,a very small turbo for quick spool up and then a big ass turbo for top end?I seen it done on an rx7.

ok her we go and try and keep up
first off go buy Maximum Boost by Corky Bell
read it all then continue reading

your talking sequential turbocharging
one turbo provides power in the low range and then at a predetermined boost stage a bypas opens and begins to spool the larger turbo therefore by the time the smaller turbos blades are about to go supersonic the larger turbo has reached the crossover and can take over the power requirements.

BMW has it on there 535d, Opel has one for a 4 cyl
3rd gen Mazda RX-7 FD's and Mark IV Toyota Supra's use a variation of this and operate in sequential mode with 2 EQUALY sized turbos instead of the more common parallel mode where both turbos spool at the same time.

http://www.lextreme.com/sqtt.html

Cheaper alternative is geting a hold of a Variable Geometry Turbocharger from a 2006 Porsche 911 (997) and making that fit and work

is it possible to do on a 420A? theoretically yes
now for the obstacles

1. manifold design
how do you mount 2 turbos and essentially 3 wastegates?

2. Turbo sizing
you are gonna go Psycho looking at compressor maps and sizing charts id be suprised if your eyes dont start bleeding.
this is the core of the sequential turbo sucess
to big initial and it wount be as efficient as a small single turbo, too small secondary and it will weez out where a larger single will keep going.

3. tuning
stand alone only and able to control between 2 and 3 wastegates for the various stages
$$$$$ for the dyno time required to get these to there full potential

4. Room
this is an ENTIRELY custom job everything is gonna have to be hand fit and fabed up once you figure out how it all works. then you have to figure out how you fit it all in there

just so ya dont think im all bad news, ill leave you with the pics that can get you started if time, money, patience, and the smarts to pull it off

Sequential cutaways

Lets play find the 3 Wastegates

Good Luck
