97834, New FMIC Piping? Posted by MitsuEclipseGS, Oct-18-06 09:00 AM
Ok so I'm looking into getting a new fmic. One that kinda looks like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FMIC-TURBO-INTERCOOLER-24x9x3-RX7-FC-FD-SRT4-PRELUDE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33742QQihZ016QQitemZ260041924757QQrdZ1
My question is has anyone found a way to run the piping from the pass side? I looked yesterday and it does not look like there would be enough room. I know eclipse982nrRST has done it, but I dont want to run a big long IC pipe behind the fmic to the drivers side and then into the turbo. I thought I saw someone else do it on here, but I searched and couldnt find anything.
So if anyone has any pics, or know how it could be done it would be much appreciated. Also dont say just buy the hahn or starion fmic, because thats not what I am asking. Thanks -Todd

Yea i did it too, i have an avenger but its almost the same. What i did is clocked the compressor housing so that the outlet faces down (14b turbo) and then cut the j-pipe and rotated it 180 degrees. next i was able to run a 2.5" pipe at a 45 degree slope to under the unibody frame then i welded a 180 degree bend on so that it went directly into the intercooler. This way there are only two couplers on the charge pipe and it really is quite simple. I thinki only used a 45 degree bend and a 180 degree bend. Let me know if you want pics. Good luck!

Thanks for both of your guys help. One question thought, does it get in the way of the dp?
Quadman313 if you have any pics of the setup Id be happy to see them. I just want to see how close everything comes.
Blake do you have any pics with the dp installed? -Todd

I got a similar intercooler and routed it both from both directions. I took these pics a while back for another dsm'er, but they should work for you as well. It's kind of a step by step I used for each piece. Piping isn't too close to ground at all so don't worry about that.
Piping and intercooler I bought off eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FMIC-GREDDYS-TURBO-INTERCOOLER-PIPING-UNIVERSAL-FITMENT_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33742QQihZ016QQitemZ260042700337QQtcZphoto
Basic angle shot:

Passenger side routing (90* couple with a 90* pipe)

Top shot. (Turbo compressor clocked downwards. Kind of hard to see, but it's close. Water line is right there and so is exhaust.) I used a 75* pipe here. Tight fit with a internal wastegate.

Here is the right side (driver side, 90* coupler with just the bend cut off of a 90* pipe.)

Just a straight pipe with my BOV flange welded on it. (Tough pic to see with the filter in the way)

Top pipe (I just used my AEM short ram intake for this part, just have to be creative with your piping for this part if you don't have it as well)

Space between my intercooler and the power steering lines.

I actually re-routed my piping like this too...before, that pipe that went behind my i/c was too long and seemed like i lost pressure in it.
now its much better like this, i have about an inch of clearance from my downpipe and piping on the p/side, but i have a 3" downpipe too

I ran mine just like totaleclipse_05 did by re-working the plumbing from my star kit.

I'm in the same boat. I was just going to post something like this to see what you guys had done. I'm about to order up some piping off egay and was trying to figure out what sizes I need. It's hard for me cause my engine is still out. can someone make a list of all of the parts? Like which pipe pieces ie.. how many straights, 90's, 75's, etc. Maybe the couplers sizes, if you used 90's off the ic or went with straight transitions, how many clamps and what sizes? It might be asking for a lot, but I'm having a hard time visualizing all the ones I'm going to need and I would hate to forget one and have to wait like a weeks if I can't find one. Mike I know you got your kit off ebay, what pipes did it have?
thanks guys

Was this question toward me? Not sure, but I will answer anyways. I posted the link above my pics of what I got. The guy I ordered it from has just piping kits with the same pipes and couplers as well. Just search his other auctions. Above the pics I posted I wrote what bends I used and couplers also.
