97725, Rebuilding & Turboing

Alright guys.

I'm checking in here to see if my list and plans is all good to go.

I've broken down and decided to turbo my 420a.

So far, I'm just now finishing up paying for a turbo kit from a guy off of DSMTuners. This kit has the T3/T4 turbo.

Next, I'm buying a FMIC off a friend.

Then, I will move on to buying the engine rebuild kit.

Finally, will be fuel mods.

I noticed in the kit you can choose from Eagle rods or Crower ones which are of course much more expensive. But the Eagle rods should be plenty strong enough, right?

I ask this because I'm not even sure what to expect power-wise from my car once it's built with .20 over and turbo'd with a t3/t4. I saw a 420a turbo once that was built and the paper on it said it dyno'd about 223hp. Now I don't know if that's wheel hp or just hp...the owner was not around. I don't know how much psi either..

So I was hoping maybe some of you out there could give me an idea what to expect from a built and turbo'd 420a....and are Eagle rods enough to do the trick? And another big question, what do you typically boost at? I was thinking 10-12psi...is that about average for this setup?

Next, as for fuel...I do NOT want to go MegaSquirt route.
So instead, I need SAFC, super fuel management unit, wideband 02, and bigger injectors....is that right? I'm a bit unsure because I thought I read somewhere that the super fuel management unit was for when running *stock* injectors...I will be running 550s.

Finally, besides the pistons and rods...do I absolutely need to get new main & rod bearings as well as new valves?

The only motor work my car has seen was a simple rebuilt to repair major oil problems. The cylinders were honed and that was about it.

I know this is a lot, but I just want to make sure I'm on the right track and not buying a few things that I don't need.

Are you kidding me? I mean, seriously.

You've been a member for THREE YEARS, with 2 posts...

SEARCH function chick. I am not normally mean to girls, atleast with your name being Nikki, I hope your a woman, and you dont read at all within those 3 years?

With the SEARCH function, those 15 minutes you just took to type all these silly questions, would have been answered already.

I mean, c'mon, seriously now.

For fuel, me been you, will go with extra injectors set-up. Less troubles. But that's only my opinion.

uhh as far as bearings go, you had better replace em or theres really no point in rebuilding..it'd be like just bolting on a turbo to your engine and boosting 15psi. just consider it an insurance policy. replace em.

Exactly, always replace those things when rebuilding an engine, same as re-using a headgasket, thats a no no!

id either learn to use the search or buy a pre built block and turbo kit from hahn

You can get it cheap, fast, or right, but only two out of three. So, if you're getting this all cheap and fast... :nono

More research. I have to agree that a lot of this has been covered before many times.

Yes. Most people here run Eagles.

'bout average, yeah.

Why? Simply put, it's *the best* fuel management solution for the money available for the 420A platform, period.

Right enough, I suppose.

You read wrong. Drop the fuel pressure and adjust the idle fuel with the SAFC, you should be able to make it idle on 550's.

Absolutely... but the valves you can leave alone.

the fmu is for stock injectors the sfmu is for bigger ones i have an safc and 450cc injectors ths safc can not cut enough fuel, only can stop it from flooding out the motor just enough to the same amount of fuel as wide open throttle its kinda scary when you start the car and it revs to 6000 and stays there til you turn it off if you run the 550s you need a sfmu to ajust fuel pressure im not sure quite how it works i went back to the stock ones and my fmu till i can afford a sfmu

Not really true. It has nothing to do with "stock" vs "larger" injectors. the FMU and sfmu deal with raising the fuel pressure according to boost. I ran the SFMU with stock injectors and I know ppl who run larger injectors with just the fmu.

Also, what the hell are you talking about here?

Please for the sake of sanity, please refrain from posting misleading or blatently wrong information. If you don't know what you are talking about then it is best for ppl looking for information if you dont post at all.

ok i wont argue because i very well may be wrong but i could not use my safc to cut enough fuel with the 450s even at -50% all the way across the board and have to drop the stockers back in till i fiure it out it was reving to 6000 rpms when i started it at no flow reduction it had trouble starting and would flood out

about the fmu i sould have said the fmuworks well stock injectors or close to it and the sfmu will work for any because of adjustability if you still feel im wrong go ahead and correct me all you want

Thanks for the replies.

As for "searching", I've looked over a couple threads in here before I posted this. I read ones that had titles that seemed to fit my topic. I found nothing. I've also looked around a bit more and maybe I'm blind but I've yet to see what kind of power is put down "average" with a built motor and turbo at certain PSI levels.

Yes, I've been a member for 3 years. But as you may have guessed from the few posts...I don't come here much.

Thanks for all the thoughts.
