97683, I need to know how to set the wastegate on....
Posted by talonguy2005, Oct-07-06 11:30 AM
I am finally going turbo, and I got a hold of a Garret T3 turbo off of a Merkur. I was told stock it is set at 13 or 14 psi. I need to know how to change the wastegate to run only like 7 psi.

I'll post up pics of the turbo as soon as I can, they might help.

You can maybe try to do the spring mod on the wastegate. GSGoinFast has a writeup on how to do it on his turbo writeup.

Ok, I got some pictures of it:

I think there is a part missing to the wastegate, someone let me know what I need to get to run 8 psi. I'm pretty sure the wastegate is only set at 10 psi too.

You mean the part that has completely rusted away? lol. I hope you got that for free, or found it on the side of the road. I would reconsider using it.

^^ I agree.. I'm usually pretty optomistic, but that turbo looks bad. The part you're missing is called the swing valve housing. As you can see the bolts that hold the swing valve housing to the turbo were apperantly pretty stuck. So the previous owner took the easy way out and decided to saw them off. Only way that turbo will work is with an external wastegate, even then you'd need to somehow bolt the exhaust flange to it..

To sum it all up, buy a new turbo.

Ditto. That thing looks like garbage.

Well, if you do decide to do a wastegate mod on a more useful turbo, I have done a write-up on another site a while ago on it (pics too):

huh, never remember seeing it with a clamp like that before, but maybe i just didn't see it. That's pretty damn smart because it takes the guessing out of it. I guess you could just move the clamp to tweak it a little too eh?
