Ok, so the dealer didn’t take my car which is why I'm rebuilding it.

I'm using Weisco 8.8:1 with Eagle rods. I pulled the motor out of a 97 Breeze. Getting it bored .020 over, and honed. Am I going the WRONG route by just having my engine machinist not put together the short block? Taking apart the junkyard block wasn’t hard at all.

I have the blown engine still in my car and am just waiting on the guy to finish up. What else should I be doing? Money is a HUGE issue. This happened at a really bad time, but I can scrape along if need be.

I'm also considering not decking the head and just using a MLS head gasket to account for the surface irregularities. Am I screwing myself?

Your suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

If I were you I would ahve the machine shop assemble the engine from bedplate to head. They'll fit the pistons to the rods for you and assemble everything properly. you hope. I know my machine shop kicks ass soo.....:shrug

Yes and please have the head decked, it really isn't that expensive, eat at home a couple days instead of mcdonalds or something and that'll pay for it.

depends on how confident you are with putting the engine together.

If you have the shop install it YOU TELL THEM:
use anaerobic sealant to seal the beadplate/oil pump
and put or replace that little o ring that goes where the oil filter goes
plug the holes they unplugged when they cleaned the block

bitch machine shop did do any of that and I wound up diassembling most of the work and putting back together myself. Then i had to pull the engine again because it puked oil all over my garage.

don't have em question you also its in the factory manual, my machinist questioned me when he went and screwed up I explained it to him and all he said was OH I guess you better reseal it then. X_X!

My machinist is wanting an extra 250 to assemble the shortblock. Should I tell him to go screw himself or have him do it. Its also a possibility to reassemble it myself.

$250.00 really isn't that bad. Most shops are around $50.00 an hour for labor and thats pretty good. But if your comfortable doing it yourself it's not that bad. Just listen to the advise given above and you'll be ok. And your absolutly crazy if you don't have the head decked at this point, it WILL bite you in the ass later and should cost less than $40.00. I think I paid $35.00 for my last one. Good luck!! :thumbsup

Possible but 250 bucks isn't that much in the grand scheme of things. Seriously, I've spent more then that on injectors.

If you have to ask then you should have a machine shop do it.

here is the question you should answer. Is 250.00 worth it if you screw up and damage a cylinder wall because a ring hung up on the piston or if you dont torque things perfectly and you spin a bearing? Was it worth saving the 250.00?

Do you have the tools to assemble a motor? A set of wrenches wont cut it.
