hey guys just wondering wat people think about the obx intake manifold and if it is a worth while by, and if it sux buying it from Concept Illusions then anybody have any suggestions on where i could get one, thanx guys http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OBX-Intake-Manifold-Eclipse-Talon-420a-Map-Drilled_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ36474QQihZ010QQitemZ200031340215QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

a properly ported and polished stock manifold that is gasket matched and has a 60mm TB is good for a fenominal amount of power. if you really want a sheet metal manifold, read what ya can and do some math then make it yourself. with most of the welds being straight runs i can be done fairly inexpensivly. if you NEED a 72mm tb and are pushing the HP to utalise it then custom would be the way to go. however if your looking custom anyway, might want to look in to an ITB (individual throttle bodies) set up.
best setup really will depend on the HP goal your looking for.
if your just wanting somthing shiny under the hood, our manifolds can be polished up really well with some time and elbow grease.

Phenominal you mean? I wouldn't go that far, but granted the ported/polished stock manifold and gasket matched will open up the car for some power gain. Unless you're pushing serious amounts of boost, there is no reason to go over a 60mm TB.
My opinion on the OBX manifold...do not waste the time or money on something so poorly designed that they couldn't even setup a mount for the MAP sensor...that alone lets you know how well this company tries to engineer themselves out of a paper bag. There are better things worth spending your money on, like getting that stock manifold opened up, or better yet a turbo system.
This should probably be moved to General or the Performance section.

OBX didnt engineer shit.. Its a Venom manifold copy...
And I have yet to see any proof that the manifold does not help...just everyones opinions that OBX is junk so the manifold gets lumped into that opinoin
But there is a fact that the stock manifold is inferior.
I would like to see dyno sheets on stock VS OBX and ported stock vs OBX.....anyone??

97574, RE: Peoples opinion on OBX Intake Manifold Posted by DarkOne, Oct-02-06 10:29 AM
The OBX (and Venom) manifolds were designed more to be shiny replacements for stock, and mate to all the stock pieces and locations than for performance.

Let me just whip out my flowbench here.......
As far as hp gains go, I meant don't waste your money. People think you just change a part like a manifold and think they get 20whp no problem. No it's not really like that even though some guys ebay auction says so.

flowbench numbers aren't always gold. ive personally seen superbike heads ported and polished that on paper flow more, but in real life didnt make as much power as a SMALLER port for the stock heads. WHY? velocity.
the point is to have a setup that will flow the amount of air, at the right speed.
the OBX manifold is a poor design, but ive yet to see any dyno proven, or disproven gains.
like foggy said, read a lot. do some math...roll some sheet, and TIG it.

I like how everyone says dont waste your money on one. My question to you guys is, have you ever tried one? No I doubt it. So if you dont know why the hell are you telling him not to waste his money?
I have the VENOM manifold which is the same as the OBX and I love it. Thats why it is on my car. If I dont like something, it doesnt stay on the beast. I personally, have felt a gain since it was put on. Yeah you can port, polish your head, thats fine too. But for the people who are telling you that the stuff is junk and they havent even used one, they dont know what they are talking about. Thats like telling someone that is N/A and doesnt ever want to turbo their car, that being N/A is faster just because he "thinks" so in his head. Unless you have tried one, dont talk down on these manifolds. You can say "well I have heard they are cheap and no gains are added from one", well got news for you, I have heard a lot of things about a lot of different products that I have used and I am very happy with them. Just because one person says they didnt like it or whatever, doesnt mean the products are junk.
End of rant.

I agree, it is easy to get on the company hating bandwagon without knowing first hand how the product works in real life. However, that still leaves that fact that holes have to be made in a piece that should have been there when it was bought! I have one of these coming because I got a deal on it with EGR block off, injectors, fuel rail, with intake manifold. I mostly bought because it looks nice and the price was right.

Good point. It just shows that more time wasn't used to take into consideration the mounting/placement of the MAP sensor. However, if you are looking to buy this and then plan on doing the modifications to it to make it work right...then by all means buy the product and get to work.

I had an OBX Manifold when I first boosted my car. It took a little fab work to get it to work with my 60mm TB and to route the vac lines etc. but nothing too difficult and I was happy with it. The qualty of the welds and materiald arent bad, not great, but not bad. I had to take it off for emmisions test (had to put the EGR back) and I can say on the butt dyno there was definately more power on the top end with the OBX.

As far as the obx or venom I have no clue if they do anything benefical for you. But what I do know is that mine intake (custome) with the combo of the mustang tb is easily one of the top three mods done to on my car.

That's like saying that just because I've never stabbed my dick with a fork, that I don't know it hurts.
I can think about it and know that it hurts, just like I can look at an OBX/Venom manifold and tell you it's not a well designed performance part.

Well designed or not, I personally have felt a gain from it in my top end, end of story.

If i paid $400 for a chrome hunk of crap, I'd justify it any way I could, too.
|
97598, RE: Peoples opinion on OBX Intake Manifold Posted by Avenger, Oct-04-06 08:54 AM
Felt or shown? There's a big difference. Seeing area under dyno plot, seeing changes in the hp and tq curves, seeing peak numbers, or track numbers makes for a better arguement. Butt dyno don't mean much.
My opinion is that having a greater plenum volume will help if you are moving ALOT of air. I highly doubt that much. Having smooth runners probably helps more. But if you're NA or running low boost the excess volume will hurt/kill response. But that's just me.

If it was junk and I felt it was worthless to my engine, I wouldnt be using it. I dont use parts that just look nice in my engine bay, I use parts that make it faster.
Have you ever used one before Dino? No, I dont ever recal seeing that you have, so until you do, you have no right to say its a hunk of crap.

Riiiight. Looks like you have plenty of parts that just "look nice". That's okay, though.
If you know that the manifold made your engine produce more power... then show us the results! The point is, you're bullshitting just as much as anyone else here. "Seat of the pants" is often wrong.
If I had to *guess* though... I would assume that this manifold would actually help a little. That doesn't mean it's not a piece of shit, because it is. But... the stock plenum is very very small, and increasing the plenum volume alone should yield some gains. Just keep in mind that OBX completely copied the design from Venom, just like they do with every part they make (that's their business model)... and the Venom manifold has shown loses on the dyno.
I'll show you guys what a real sheet metal intake manifold looks like here in a few weeks. I'll even back it up with some numbers. Until one of you do the same... the OBX manifold can't be written off as a gain nor a loss.

Again, I don't need to stab myself to know it hurts. I've seen Venom units, help them in my hands, nspected them. I know what the characteristics are of a well performing manifold. The stocker has none of them, and the OBX/Venom has few. For $400, it's a hunk of crap.
Stock length and slightly larger than stock diameter runners, and a big plenum. You completely lose low end air velocity resulting in a LOSS of low end power. The stock length runners can't offset the loss of low end torge, and the length is too long for a greater than minimal high end gain.
Replacing a piece of shit stock manifold (and it is) with a piece of shit OBX manifolkd and picking up a little power is a no-brainer. it doesn't mean the OBX isn't a piece of shit, it means the stock manifold pretty much junk.

97618, RE: Peoples opinion on OBX Intake Manifold Posted by CanadianCarGuy, Oct-04-06 02:32 PM
The whole point of upgrading an intake manifold is to change horsepower and torque curve of the engine. Larger volume intakes will move the power higher up in the rpm range. Of course you would think it sucks if you are not constantly driving redline. Also upgrading the intake manifold without upgrading the throttlebody diameter or having a turbo to move more air at a higher velocity would be kind of a waste of money unless you are building a N/A engine that will rev over 8000 RPM. I have never read anywhere that an intake manifold adds a lot of power, only moves the power to different rev's. Of course if you have a crappy manifold to begin with anything that flows either more volume, or flow at higher speed will add power. It really depends what you are building your engine for!

What in your opinion then would make a good manifold for the 420a? Nothing serious now, just plain and simple points and concepts that would make a better 420a manifold.

A heavily ported/polished stocker or a Venom :)

This is the way I would do it depending on the cash on hand to spend.
1. Stock intake that is ported and polished with another set of injectors plumbed in is really all you need for a lot of power. CHEAP AND EFFECTIVE MAINTAINING MORE LOW END TORQUE, WHILE ADDRESSING FLOW PROBLEMS
2. If you are not into doing all that work yourself, then buying an intake manifold with a fuel rail that has larger injectors installed already would be the way to go. MORE EXPENSIVE AND SMALLER RANGE OF TORQUE, BUT MORE PEAK POWER AND VOLUME TO GO WITH THE ADDITIONAL FLOW
3. If you were real serious about maximum power and tuning ability a custom equal length runner manifold with a separate throttlebody for each cylinder is the way to go. Along with separate wideband o2 sensors in each equal length (Just stuff I like to think about)header tube whether it be a turbo header or not. VERY COSTLY CUSTOM FABRICATION REQUIRED AND A LOT OF POWER AT ONLY JUST BEFORE REDLINE USUALLY.
Just my thoughts and opinions, and may not be exactly right, but I am not a tuner by far!

However, another set of injectors being plumbed all you really need for a lot of power? Theres several other factors and conditions to take into consideration, not just slapping 4 more injectors in and calling it a day.

I'm lost, how does adding a new fuel rail, larger injectors yield a smaller range of torque, and produce more power? Injectors purpose is to deliver fuel. Depending on the type of power you are making you may have to upgrade to a larger injector...but that certainly would not cause there to be a smaller range of torque. Again several other factors to take in.

You're right about one thing here...very costly. Everything else however...I think sticking wideband o2's in each runner that close to the head you're going to be burning up sensors like crazy...and why would you need one for each runner? Wideband o2 sensors are typically placed in the downpipe.
