97099, Sputtering above ~20% throttle Posted by bzoss, Sep-06-06 02:55 PM
Ok, I know this won't make much sence, but I will try and explain it the best I can. First of all, the mods... 8.8:1 8:1 FMU 255 HP walbro 32# injectors T3
Ok, so I can come into boost, as long as it is gradual. I don't get any fuel cuts. As I step on the gas, (get >20% throttle), the car starts sputtering and lots of white smoke comes out the exhaust. The amount of white smoke is proportional to the amount of time I hold the gas and the car is sputtering. No smoke under normal boost and light driving conditions.
Why can't I hall ass? Or go >20% throttle without this problem.
Also, I went for a drive tonight for the first time for about 10 miles just cruising to spread my baby's wings for a bit, when I got back and popped the hood I noticed that my turbo was glowing red. Is that normal? I know that it gets hot... but damn! I have a heat shield on it also to help keep the under hood temps down.
Please help!

Are sure thats the correct ratio FMU caibration kit for those injectors?
You should be running a better FPR or SFMU.

White smoke? Are you sure its white and not bluish or blackish. White smoke is usually water/coolant related. Is your turbo water cooled?
Will the car do it in nuetral revving in the driveway?
8:1 sounds right for the fmu

FCD, and yes it is water cooled. And yes I am pretty sure that it is white smoke.
No boost gage, and the fuel pressure gage is under the hood. I am going to go to the dyno soon hopefully, so I will have boost indications, and fuel pressures. I am pretty sure that the FMU is responding correctly, and I don't believe that boost gets above 8psi. However, I can't really say for sure.
I think that the seals may be bad in the turbo, think that is causing the white smoke? And possibly that sputtering? Maybe it is sucking up some water? I notice a little bit of white smoke from the turbo once I pop the hood after a run, so maybe the seals are bad eh?

Its the turbo. remove the water lines from the turbo and splice them together with a barbed fitting. That will work for a while. Your going to need a turbo rebuild.

So, are you saying that all that is because water is being sucked into the engine?

We can't say for sure but removing the water lines from the turbo would be the first logical step.

My oil supply line is too big. I don't know if that is causing the sputtering, but definetely the smoke. Oil is getting everywhere. I am getting some smaller line tomorrow. I will post an update. Hopefully it was the culpret for both problems.

Ok, I fixed the smoking problem. I needed to connect a line from the valve cover vent to the intake of the turbo. It fixed the problem right away. But I still have the problem with the sputtering at anything greater than %25 throttle.
What the heck???

Just for anyone reading this later to know, the problem was fixed by regapping my spark plugs to under .030"
HOpe this helps some of you with the same problem

Are you kidding? That would have been the LAST thing I would have thought causing your problems haha. Well, glad to see you fixed it.

I was going to suggest the sprak plug theory...I had the same problem a few months ago. mine's still running like a champ by the way
