96902, Dyno Day.

First off I need to get the graphs scanned so dont worry, I will.

I dyno'd this morning at 9am at Area One Motorsports on a Dynapack.

Car stats.
-18psi pulls
-Max Rpm 6000
-Megasquirt controlling fuel only, map in very nice shape. Can use more fine tuning.
-MSD coil, no ignition box
-stock cams
-built 8.8:1 block
-stock TB and intake
-Mild headwork
-Weather: Rainy and very humid, 79 degrees

-Peak HP was 302 at 5600 RPM
-One pull blew the spark out and it hiccuped.that pull sucked
-Last pull began to heatsoak and cost me 16hp

-EGT never climbed above 1550.
-AFR was very close the where i wanted it. I set it a tad rich at high end for safety.
-Boost was very stable, wish my spool up was quicker but the 2.5 piping has effected it.

-Graph analyze: AFR was ok but i have a rich spot in the 4500-5500 range that put me around 10.9 afr. Tuner agreed this can be brought down to high 11's safely to add a few ponies and smooth out the torque curve. All in all not bad at all in terms of AFR.

-Turns out the Tech edge wideband (display) I have is very accurate and not off like many.

-Best part is: no blown pipes or broken parts.

With the new targets we discussed, i should be able to squeeze 20psi on these injectors.

The owner of the shop was very down to earth, i got to hang out in the shop as he set the dyno up. Let me say the dynapack is very compact and would fit in my garage very easily without takign up much space. Its not a full drive on rack. I got to sit in the car for all the pulls and he offered to let me adjust maps and try diff settings in between pulls.

I will get the dyno sheets posted as soon as i have time to get them scanned.

Not bad for an amature tuner. Map was tuned in less than 6 months. Today I am happy.

That's what matters the most.. I guess it's why we are all here. Glad to hear everything went ok and nothing blew up. You also showed some good numbers for your setup.

Not too shabby Terry, I thought you would be in the 320-330 hp with 18psi and MS though.

All and all looks good, I need to work on getting my car tuned a little bit before the big day, Sept 21 :)

EDIT: whats your 'mild' head work?

nice, what injectors and more importantly map!

I hope to get mine on the school dyno come sept.

You're going to use this dyno from now on right? HP can vary from dyno to dyno, what makes 300hp on one dyno can make 275hp on a different dyno the same day, so now that you've got a baseline with this guy, keep going back to him whenever you change something. Also, did you have a fan on you and what wind speed was it set too? Congrats on the numbers, you put down more than three, you should be very proud of yourself :cheers

Well there is a small amount of question on the PSI Mike. The dyno read 18psi but i have to review my logs. Greddy only saw 122kpa which is about 16psi. 2 psi variance is common i am sure. I have to see what the MS saw and make a conclution from that.

With some refinement on the VE map i bet i could get 310 out of it, maybe 315, who knows. With spark added into the MS control then i am sure the numbers you expect could be reality. You got to understand I am only running fuel right now on the stock timing map. It is well known that the timing map is very conservative.

I have a lot of reviewing right now of the Logs and AFR maps to get the rich spots leaned out.

Mild headwork is just that. Mild headwork stock valves, cams , lifters.

My goal in the spring will be 350hp with the addition of Spark control and 20 psi. Lets see if that becomes reality. I would not be satified with less than 400hp by Shootout. Lets see if I can get there.

Solid results. Fine tuning along the RPM bands & increasing exhaust flow should get you more HP. Great job!!

Good job Terry! I'm glad you broke the 300whp barrier, especially after that crap at Buschurs.

why? the higher the RPM the less chance of detonation.

what, and where, was max torque? can you post a graph?

There ya go Josh. Take a look up top. I have been battling very high EGT's for some time. Well after comparing the Dyno wideband with mine to see mine is very accurate, I am going to lean things out. I was worried the 1600+ egt at high end was a problem. With the Map the way it is my EGT's peak at 1550.

I was always had the understanding that Detonation is likely under load. Since our cars have a weak spot around 4500 RPM i richened up that area by 2%. Where (RPM Range) should we be more concerned with detonation?

not bad, 694lb-ft of torque is pretty good. For a 10 liter.

try the next graph where it shows 355 Cody. I didnt get a chance to ask what the first graph was for. I think it has to do with the dyno itself.

yeah don't worry I saw it Terry :D

the first one might not be compensating for the gearing of the car.

Sweet tits! It's about time you took a break from your around-the-house projects and played with the car, lol. Im assuming you're keeping busy this summer?

Nice Terry!

It's the stock ign. timing that's keeping your EGT's so high.

What size injectors are you running for that?
96980, RE: Dyno Day.
Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Aug-27-06 09:33 PM
550cc injectors.

they are pretty much maxed out and the 720's are ready for install.

I have come to agree the timing is the issue. I just always second guessed it becasue i see other members with SFMU type setups and stock ignition with lower EGT's.

This fall i will be adding timing, larger injectors and a few other things.

Great job! I will one day be that fast. I don't care how many 7-11's I have to knock over to do it!

I hope this means you're not selling the car now.

I added it to the original post, Scroll up top to my very first post. Figured it would be easiest to find.

you're right, wherever max torque is. At the time of max torque, air speed is the highest (.55 mach) also BSFC (or fuel consumption) is at its highest, also your cylinders are at peak pressures (brake mean effective pressure) as well as MEP (or mean effective pressure) combustion temperatures are usually at their highest too. The motor demands the most fuel when its in and around its peak torque.

Older Honda turbo engines would run wildly low octane fuel and not grenade...why? one reason is that at 13k rpm's, everything is moving so retardedly fast it doesnt even have time to explode when it shouldnt. another reason is the total ignition control they had. sometimes they even would advance timing to BDC, no power is made but the exhaust is still expanding and moving, so the turbo would livin up.

sweet graph though, nice power band :thumbsup

you're right in the point that you shouldnt go over 1550 as far as EGT's, and adding fuel up top will cool the cylinders, and it will also rob you of some potential power. Detonation isnt really the concern I dont think, just the high temperatures and risk of melting things. Also those temperatures dont help with any pre-ignition or detonation, but the RPM's themselves arent whats going to make it detonate. You have ignition control right? The ignition control will help with keeping detonation and pre-ignition in check, also provide a smoother powerband too.

No ignition control right now, I wanted the base Dyno before i start adding it. I will be installing it this fall and tuning it. Right now I am going to start with getting the injectors installed and the maps re-tuned.

Thanks for the info.

Looks like you need better cams, and a higher redline. 1500 RPM's (4500 to 6000) of solid power is a pretty narrow powerband. Why did you stop at 6000? Do you have a 2.4? That turbo still has quite a bit of unused airflow left.
96989, RE: Dyno Day.
Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Aug-28-06 10:35 AM
Stopped at 6k because i didnt expect HP to keep increasing and it dropped off at 5800. We all need new cams but who has actually had good luck with any set that is produced? Thats why i still have stock cams.

Here is another congrats Terry. Can I assume that you cranked down on all of your hose clamps before running? It would be good to hit that same dyno in 6 months and see what spark and more tuning can do at the same boost.

lol yeah clamps tightened and some beads were laid that tuesday after we got home. Thanks Bud

The Plan is spring time with spark and larger injectors. I will take a reading at the same boost to compare the effects of spark and then continue on with boost.

Way to go! I'm having fun with my ms so far, and can't wait to produce those kind of numbers and then some. I don't think I saw it anywhere, but what turbo are you running?

Great numbers there Terry! At that boost level, the stock ECU is putting out roughly 17 degrees of spark advance, then starts to ramp up as rpm increaes past peak torqe RPM. At that boost level, timing is roughly where you want it to be anyway, so not much more can be gained by using the MS for timing control. Your EGT's were much like mine at roughly that boost level with 15-16 psi, and I ran 17 degrees of advance with the MS. Any more timing and it would get a small amount of detonation on 93 octane. Getting the air to flow more efficient is the key here, so any head porting, intake porting, and exhaust mods to free up the flow will help with the timing issue and high EGT's. EGT's that get that hot when you are running rich enough, is usually because of the need for MORE timing advacnce, esp in the upper rpm ranges, but you can only do that if you have the headroom for it withouth getting any knock. This can only be achieved with better efficiency, more fuel octane, lower boost, or lower compression ratio pistons(not an option really). I gained some decent power at LOWER boost, from 5-10 psi, from adding in quite a bit of timing advance compared to the stock ECU timing. At 10 psi, i ran 12.5:1 A/F and 22 degrees of timing on pump 93, EGT's were no higher than 1550.

Until just recently I didn't realize what our acronym for MegaSquirt must sound like to the un-enlightened. We sound like a proud Multiple Sclerosis ward!

And on a side note, get that spark control working, that's where you'll find your power!
