9629, I must have bad karma.... engine trouble...(long)

Yesterday I was on my way home from upstate New York to Maryland..I was cruising in 5th gear going about 70mph.. my EGTs were at 1150 (1400 corrected since the probe is in my dp).
Suddenly the engine starts studdering and bogging. It felt like the gas pedal was being stomped, then let off, then stomped again.
So I pull off the road after I knew it wasn't going to go away, and pop the hood. Everything looked ok..no smoke or any other visible problems. I checked the catchcan, and it was more than half full. I checked it just before leaving and it was empty, so I know it happened in the first 45 minutes of the trip.
I got back in the car and noticed the boost gauge was still at 19 vacuum, and the car was idling normally.
I get back on the road, and as soon as I get to 5th gear, it starts doing it again. I see an Advanced Auto Parts store at the next exit (a blessing) and pull off. I bought a quart of Mobil and put about half in, then raised the fuel pressure to 65 and took back to the highway again... the problem seems to have gone away since then.
My exhaust tip was covered in a blue-white color soot, though I never saw any smoke coming out the back of the car.

I spent the next 5 hours of the trip never boosting (ya, it sucked..I was going up hills at 40mph).

So there you have it....I need to do a compression test, but I would think it is ok since the car is still idling normally and vacuum is at 19.

Any ideas? thoughts? thanks.

Yes, i'd say do a compression test and go from there.. that doesn't sound good, Jeff..

I've had several scares where I thought my engine was toast but they were just scares. Broken spark plug, loose wire (spark plug and harness wires on different occasions) ect. Thought I was on 3 cyl many a late night in the middle of nowhere just hoping to make it home just to find it was nothing. So hopefully its the same for you.
