96106, Boost leak in throttle body shaft
Posted by DJ420a, Jul-08-06 04:45 PM
I swear I remember somebody saying that there is a fix for it. Im having a boost leak problem, so I hooked up the leak tester and found I have a good bit of air escaping out of the throttle cable side of the throttle body shaft.
I did some searching using "throttle body mod" and came up with 3 post that didnt have anything to do with it.

Does anybody know what Im talking about?

TIA
DJ

I think you would have to replace the TB or ream and install a bushing. I doubt there is a fix to be honest with you.

Damn, I had 3 throttle bodies counting this one and they all leaked like that.

probably normal Deej. I wouldnt worry to much about it. You could disassemble the TB and remove the shaft. Apply a heavy whee bearign grease to the shaft and re-install it. The grease will make it difficult for air to pass by and act as a restrictor. Wont last forever but if you do it once a year it may help.

Im def gonna give it a shot. I hope this might be the problem we've been talkin about.
I did some searching on fuel pressure dropping under boost and other members did have probs like mine but never posted a remedy.

Thanks Terry

Just an FYI, but I have not had this problem with my Modern Performance 60mm Throttle body. The last time I did a boost leak test it held without leaks.

What throttle body are you testing this with? stock? Tomorrow I will take a closer look at my MP TB and see what they did with the shaft. Might help. who knows.

Yeah, its the stocker.

That would be great if you checked that out for me. I'll hold off a little form tearing it apart, till I here something.

Thanx

They all do that. Not much that can be done.

Well....Im still gonna tear it apart and see if theres something I can do. I surely cant afford an aftermarket TB right now, lol.

Thanks guys

Yeah i've noticed too that the MP TB doesnt really leak either..I noticed steadier boost when running 18 psi with it. On a side note, I can tell the MP TB works and is flowing better than stock, because I had to richen up my Megasquirt VE fuel table by approx 2-3%. That mod, along with some good weight reduction in the hatch(stereo crap), took 4 tenths off of my 1/4 time :)

Well I didnt stop it from leaking but I got it to take about 15 minutes to loose 15psi, when before it lost 15psi in about 10 seconds.

Excellent info ^. that would have quickly ended a lot of the 60mm help vs. hurt discussions in past threads

I know this thread is a bit older, but I have a question. When you did your test....how much PSI did you get it up too? Mine won't hold more then 5psi before the air starts whinning out of the TB. Makes a sound like if you were to blow up a ballon and pinch the tip and slowly stretch it so it makes that high pitched squeel. Other then that I think my setup will hold boost.

I just know with my little S16G turbo it should be spoolin up a lot faster then what it does. I also have a huge exhaust leak I need to tend too!

Sounds like I just need to get a HRC 3" eliminator and MP 60mm TB.

You should be able to hold more than 5 psi without any sounds. If it leaks at 5 psi then you are not getting that leaking air when you boost past 5 psi.

Fix your leak and test again. Should be able to hold 20 psi or blow your tester off.
