95609, downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-11-06 03:09 PM
so im putting a 14b turbo on my 2gnt, and i need to find a compatible downpipe for it. i was wondering if i can buy the apex gt downpipe for the GST? any idea, or what downpipe i need?

you will not be able to buy a downpipe that will fit. You will need to have one made for you.

95611, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-11-06 03:47 PM
so how do people put the 14b's on there 420a motors? do they all go and have a custom downpipe made for it?

Yes.

so do i have to have the turbo kit installed first to go get a downpipe made, or can i just bring my car, with the the turbo kit to a muffler shop, and have them build me one?
|
95614, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by BumpinTalon, Jun-11-06 04:16 PM
You should probably install everything yourself first. Odds are pretty good you have an O2 sensor housing for your 14B, that will work as a downpipe on your drive to the muffler shop, it would probably be a good idea to find a downpipe flange that matches the one on the housing to give to the shop, and then tell them to make you a 3" downpipe with flex, with mandrel bent piping if at all possible.

95615, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-11-06 04:48 PM
do you think theres anyone i can just buy a downpipe from? like anyone on this site?
|
95616, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by cc8balla, Jun-11-06 05:24 PM
You have to have a custom made manifod too, I believe.

95617, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-11-06 05:35 PM
its already got a manifold that came off of a 2g, it was originally from a guy on here.

95618, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-11-06 06:48 PM
so what places near columbus ohio would custom make a downpipe... since thats where ill be when im putting it on in three weeks.

I think the comment about the O2 housing is worth mentioning again. Here is a picture of the 14b bolted up to my 4G63.
You can see the O2 housing on the right side. You will need a pipe coming straight off the cat with a flex section in it for good measure, then curve it up to meet this flange.

95620, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by Keith2172, Jun-12-06 07:13 AM
Fuck it, find a flange and weld a 6in section of 3in pipe to it. Bolt that m'fer on and drive the piss out of it, it'll sound good.
P.S. Might want to drive with the windows up, NOx and CO1 doesn't do well in the drivers cabin.

95621, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-12-06 08:47 AM
so do i need an o2 housing for the 420a? if so, do i need one of these custom made too, because i cant find one thats for anything but a 4g63 either.

Brian, where did you get that explosives sign? I want one...

I was wondering when someone would notice that. I used to work at a decal plant and had an extra one printed. It's not centered on the card stock, but it's still kinda cool, eh? :P
Originally posted by n3r0 FmX so do i need an o2 housing for the 420a? There is no O2 housing for the 420A. If you have the one that came with that turbo, then figure out a way to remove/cap off that sensor bung, and connect your stock exhaust pipe to that flange.
I don't know if it would work, but consider cutting your stock DP about an inch above the O2 sensor, then you would just need piping to connect the stock DP to the flange on the 14b O2 housing.

95624, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-12-06 09:28 AM
well it doesnt have an o2 housing, but i was just wondering if i needed one. my friend i just saw in the bank said his dad can make me a custom downpipe, so once i get the kit, ill drive the car to his house, we will take off the manifold, put the new manifold and turbo on there, and then make a DP for later when the kit officially gets put on... yay, im getting somewhere, i think this is the last part in the process.

95625, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by thedawg, Jun-12-06 12:05 PM
The manifold did come off a 2GNT right?
If you don't have an o2 housing, you're going to either have to fabricate an o2 dump tube or route it back into your custom downpipe.
Another option, depending on whether this is a factory 2GNT manifold, is to get the GS-T cat and downpipe.
|
95626, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-12-06 12:19 PM
im just gunna get a custom pipe built from the cat to that 2 bolt flange on the housing, and block the other hole off of it, now that i have someone that can do it... it may turn out ghetto, but its all good.

95627, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-12-06 02:01 PM
so...
1.) i dont need an o2 housing at all... and 2.)i can get the gs-t downpipe or something?

yes, but then people just start saying different stuff, and it just confuses the hell out of me. i just thought i could search on this site and find someone who had done this in the past and get all the answers straight up. i didnt know that buying this turbo kit "to start off" as they told me on the other site, was going to be more of a mess than just buying a bigger kit.

Sorry to be a dick in the post above, but let me sum this up for you.
The 420a is a chrystler/dodge engine. It was NEVER turbo from the factory and was not made to be a turbo engine...PERIOD, end of story enough said. The 4g63 is a MITSUBISHI engine(the only engine the 14b came on).
1. You do not need the stock o2 housing from a 14b and YOU CANNOT USE IT. What you need to do is go on Ebay and buy a blank flange and then buy some mandrewl bends/go to the muffler shop and get one custom made. The 14b was never intended on being used for a 420a motor. It is the same concept as trying to make on fit on a honda civic. Two totally different designs that can work with modification, but nothing is a direct fit...trust me.
2. The reason you cannot use a stock mitsubishi turbo manifold is due to the fact that you are trying to bolt a mitsubishi piece to a chrystler motor. Nothing fits/works. The main reason you cannot use the stock o2 housing is because when you clock the turbo to fit on a log style manifold, the o2 housing will point strait up in the air instead of down like pictured in DRIGGS picture above.

No one has done this because it's a huge pain in the ass and stupid, considering there are much better turbo options out there besides the 14b. Anything you do is going to be completely custom.
What I said that may have confused you is that IF you got ripped off and received a factory OEM 420a exhaust manifold, instead of an actual custom turbo manifold, the 14b would actually bolt up, and you might be able to use some GST parts. This would be extremely ghetto and would require lots of modification to other things.
At any rate, we can't tell you anything for certain because we have no idea what manifold you are using. Everyone is assuming you have a HRC/STAR manifold, but if I'm not mistaken the 14b wouldn't even bolt to them.

thats the kit right there...
http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=16&topic_id=88104&mesg_id=88104&listing_type=search
thats the link to the original person selling the kit on here... so it looks like its already ready to be put onto the 420a. so maybe i can try and use the gst downpipe? maybe i should contact this guy if he even still frequents this site.

95636, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-12-06 05:24 PM
and i have one more questions, to just stop this madness...
would i be able to buy the following three items..
HRC Turbo, Manifold, and downpipe, and just replace what i have right now with that kit? and then i can get rid of the $500 custom everything job, and have a much better turbo?

95637, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by ChloRure, Jun-12-06 05:38 PM
You need ~1000+ if you want these parts new!
|
95638, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by thedawg, Jun-12-06 07:56 PM
OK, that's probably an early Streetsource manifold, with a custom 14b flange welded on. There's nothing you can do with any stock parts from any car. You must fabricate a completely custom downpipe and o2 dump.
Also I'd rotate the CHRA and clock the turbo so the oil feed is straight down instead of a 45* angle.

95639, RE: downpipe for 14b on a 2gnt. Posted by n3r0 FmX, Jun-13-06 02:43 AM
ok, well at least we are on the right page now, i know a person who can do this stuff too.

ok, this is one of the only parts that are confusing me... what is the end of this cable... where do 1 and 2 go...?
![]()
now if im correct, 1 goes into the block, and 2 goes on the top of the turbo, the oil inlet right?
![]()
now if the circled part is the oil outlet, then what goes in there? what do i connec to it, it must be one of the ends in one of those pictures up above.
now, what end in those pictures goes into the oil pan???
if i can get these questions answered, i will be good on the oil part of the turbo.

dude, i told you that you would need a custom downpipe. i included the flange, very easy to do...take to a muffler shop.....whats the big deal??? lol and no that gst down pipe wont work, why spend all that money when you could get a custom down pipe alot cheaper and make everything soo much easier. well good luck on everything though. anymore questions just use the search, its all there bro.

Like thedawg said, get the turbo clocked so the oil drain is aligned properly, then have a decent DP made to match up with it. This will be your call - you can either have something made to replace the OEM (which would give you a stocker for an emergency swap later on), or cut the stocker off where it starts pointing up from towards the manifold and only modify it to meet the turbine outlet.
If you've got a SMIC in the factory location, plumbing could be a bitch. You might give some thought (which I have not at this point) as to installing a DSM SMIC in front of the driver's side wheel well. the piping would look similar to an HRC kit, with two pipes going in/out of the fender under the fuse box. *That's *if* this could be done.*
Don't worry about what you have or don't have. Determine what you need. Only then can you figure out the best way to get it done.
Good luck. I'm curious to see how this one turns out. Might even see me sporting something like this one day. Given the bits I have lying about the garage these days, I have half a mind to pop for the FPR, pump, and piping and just boost this bitch for shits and giggles. :shrug

DSM smic is for passenger side which you know. The piping is angled to go up into an opening that would put the pipe... into the driver-side headlight on a 2GNT. Not to mention it's tiny.
1G: 2G: HRC:
For all the trouble and piping BS you're going to go through to plumb a sidemount, you might as well spend an extra $50 and buy a frontmount. OEM EVO8 FMIC's are cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Evolution-Evo-VIII-OEM-Front-mount-intercooler_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6763QQitemZ8074974494QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW. Dejontool also makes some great FMIC's and piping products you could try to adapt to the 2GNT.
Edit: Driggs, I'm posting a lot in this thread because I've been looking into doing this too, for as cheap as possible. Having RRE a mile away means I have an unlimited source of OEM turbo pieces...

I just read the old listing and looks like he probably already got a Starion FMIC and all the piping, which would work fine. So yeah, disregard our SMIC derail.

o shit, where are those pics from... i could use more to go by...
heres what i have done so far...
turbo manifold with turbo is on, downpipe to cat is removed, oil pan is off and ready to be tapped... except i really dont know EXACTLY where to tap it at... and now im working from there... this sucks kinda right now, but ill have it done by next week, and then ill keep you guys updated on it, so you can do it yourselves.

Wouldn't the piping under the radiator support like that be somewhat of a liability? It looks a little to precarious for me. I've got my own ideas as far as the SMIC, and a 2gen IC will fit just nicely }(
