Hello all, been a while since Ive posted here on 2gNT, lot of new faces...but anywho:

Im currently running the s16g at 22psi on pump, but the new goal is anything north of 400whp, on pump.

My prereq for doing so however are not wanting to hack up my current manifold (HRC) -- at least not until I have the cash on hand to get a manifold made like I want. So in the meantime Ive been looking at larger, internally gated turbos, mostly GT30 and GT32 variants -- though recently I have been looking into Holset's.

Has anyone tried out a holset on a 420a yet?

If so, has anyone attempted using the internal wastegate w/ the hx35. I know some of the 2.3 Ford guys do with success, just wondering if anyone here has. Seems like all of the honda/audi guys seal em up and run external gates, but they, esp the honda guys, seem to like running bitch boost on huge turbo's.

I know that these wastegate generally have setting up near 30psi, but that is easily changed by modding the actuator or using a different one entirely.

I do realize the inherit performance disadvantage of using the internal wg, and the boost creep issues to be had when running such a large turbo at low boost levels. But has anyone attempted to run an internal wg w/ one of these larger holsets yet? Or I guess a better question here is, has anyone even tried using a holset, (HX35 or HY35 preferrably). Where are you guys spooling these at?

I had previously just been looking at GT30s and GT32s since they seem to be the largest internally gated turbos w/ a t3 exhaust flange commonly available -- but with how much these holsets flow im considering my options.

My other question is about the HE351CW -- it appears to be an HX40 wheel in an hy35 housing -- essentially a factory hybrid. Anyone have any info on this turbo? Ive seen the compressor map on honda-tech.com but there is some type of solenoid/actuator in the compresor housing im curious about -- it attaches to the WG, perhap some type of electronic boost control? How much of an issue would it be to remove this?

Ive also seen HX35/40 hybrids, though I think it would be overkill for my modest goals. opinions?

except... a holset is $300 used ($825 brand new). a GT35R even used is $1100, and the holset compressor flows more across a much wider range anyway, and its sweet spot is right around where you would boost in your typical street car, 14-20psi. plus the holset comes already with a v-band outlet, so if you were going to go that way or already have the Hahn 3" v-band downpipe, mucho money saved with not having to get the internal v-band wastegate ATP makes (which is $180usd on its own).

with a properly made (pulse) manifold with ancient cylinder heads on a 2.3 liter, the turboford guys can spool their HX35s by 3300rpm. with modern cylinder heads and cams, we could do so by about 3100-3200. or just use some nitrous or get a megasquirt and set it up for anti-lag and be boosting before you even leave the line. if an HX35 is too laggy, you can run the HY35 (2001 and up AUTOMATIC dodge diesels) which is comparable to a .48 AR turbine housing (roughly 9cm^2 is the more accurate way to describe it).

boost creep problems with a large turbo with internal wastegate are actually more rare then with a small turbo.. since it takes more exhaust gas to spin the turbine wheel anyway, you don't have to vent as much. the stock internal wastegate is already pretty large too. fitting a turbo that big, I would recommend you go to one of the smaller HKS-style actuators that is pre-set to a lower psi boost instead of mucking with the gigantic holset one. it will help you fit it, but you will probably have clearance problems and need to get crafty anyway, but if a super 25G fits, a hx35 will fit.

An HX35/40 would definitely be overkill. a hx35 will be plenty to get you to 500whp :D

your extra 800 bucks doesn't get you much except ball bearings, which make an entire 500rpm difference. don't bother with it.

I have an hx35 but unfortunately not much time to put it all together. I can let you know how it fits on my hahn manifold in a little while.

Please let me know, Im concerned w/ clearance issues.

As far as lag goes, from what ive seen from the honda and audi guys, lag is comparable with ball bearing GT series turbo's (one owner reported 17psi by 3400rpm in 3rd, 2.0L VW, HX35 and 17psi at 3750 w/ a HX40 wheel in a HX35 housing). Specific 420a numbers would be nice to have, but those numbers are comparable with what I see now w/ a s16g.

Any chance of checking clearance issues with the hahn manifold yet?

ive been _this_ close to buying a couple hx35s, but have passed b/c im still not sure if ill even be able to use my manifold

haha nope still no time... I've been installing my suspension and working 10 hours of overtime a week so the turbo is on the backburner. If I can find some time, I'll mock it up really quick on my "free-est" day, probably wednesday

I know this thread is super-old, but its been a long time coming...

Finally took the car out last night for a few boosted runs. Its been nearly 2 years since I started talking about upgrading, but its now nearing completion.

Early on I was talking about the hx35, but I ended up going with the larger HX40 (~71 lb/min) with a BEP exhaust housing.

On my first drive, I intially actually had the EBC vac lines routed wrong, and was seeing 20+ psi and had to use throttle to control boost, (oops, lol). 1/2 throttle 3rd gear pulls were just insane. Couldnt keep in it for long because of the boost, but it reminded me of our old 530whp ITR -- scary.

I eventually just pulled over, and disc the ebc and just ran off the wastegate and got a nice flat 12psi. Car felt really strong still. Nothing crazy, just some short 2nd/3rd gear pulls to check for leaks and such and everything seemed good to go.

Lag is not nearly as bad as I thought it might be with such a large turbine wheel - Im sure the small BEP housing helps. I will get numbers later, but just from the short run time last night, seemed to start boosting at 2500-2800 and had full 12psi by mid 3K rpm. On the earlier runs with the wastegate not opening, once you got past 10-12psi, boost would just slam past 20psi -- it hits hard.

very greatful Im running BFG DR's up front now -- couldnt see the old khumos doing anything but spinning. I know these wont last long on the street, but i love 'em.

used my lunch break today to play with the car.

fixed the boost issue -- the lines were routed just fine, i just needed to flip a couple dip switches on the ebc. have low set at 15 psi...will play around with high boost soon.

also pulled out the old battery and assoc wiring...

replaced all this:

-40-50 lbs from the rear
+6 lbs over the drive wheels :)

FYI (A bit behind here) the HE series Holset use, as you said, a built-in EBC setup. The HX35W is the internally wastegated model, usually set around 12psi factory (5.9 cummins, dodge rams to heavy trucks, sterling/ford, etc.) Some are 15/17, but not any higher. The '95 Ford cab-over models I work on are pressure injected (vs. electornic in the '95 rams) and run 12psi. I stuck one on my '71 chevelle with an EFI 350 +.060 and the thing couldn't even build boost off the line. Once it did get goin though, it would scream. Broke the back end loose one time around 50mph as the boost gauge went 0,1,5,12 in like half a second. I've heard of the neon guys running them, and they do lag but apparently run pretty well. I haven't gotten around to trying it as my manifold is a t3 bolt and it's not just a straight fit. Around town I'd say it'd suck, but for a strip setup it'd probably work great

I have a hx40 with a bep exhuast housing and lag isnt bad at all actually, 15psi by 3500-3800 rpm (8.5:1 compression, treadstone log manifold, 38mm tial wg, profec b)

doesnt seem to be much, if any worse, than anyone running decent sized t3/t4. My s16g wasnt even much better :dunno:

Probably a little late to give my 2 cents but i read on tunners i think about 420a or 4g63 guys cant remember using the holesets and they loved them. If i would of known i coulda used one befor i bought my turbo kit i probably would have. My 95 dodge has a holeset with 298,000 + miles on it,has less shaft play than the newer turbo in my car and boost up to 35 psi with no problems or controller. Simply put, there great f/n turbos and will last a long time

Finally got a pic under the hood..

Again, its a Holset HX40 with Bullseye Power Turbine Housing



I have a non-lettered neon valve cover powdercoated in the same wrinkle black as the IC piping waiting to go, along with an crankcase exhaust evac setup (need to weld in the slashcuts into the exhaust piping)



And for any old school members who still remember me...i pulled the body kit off and went back to stock body. Lots or primer now where I had to fill holes, but hopefully have it painted soon (thinking flat black)
