The Garrett site has always been one of my favorite resources for understanding turbos. I checked out tonight and much to my surprise, they've updated the whole thing.

I've only skimmed a couple paragraphs, but it looks like this site could offer a good hour or two of enlightenment, if you were interested. From how a turbo works to maximum allowable compression ratio under maximum load, this site has pretty much all you need to know about turbos in general.

Comparing some very popular Garrett turbo compressor maps to those of a Holset HX30 and HX35 ... since this is as good a thread as any.





HX30

HY35/HX35 (Stock Dodge Cummins turbodiesel turbo 94-present, HY on the automatics 2001 and up)


Both have standard T3 inlets. HY35 is a single scroll roughly 9cm^2 turbine, HX35 is a dual scroll divided inlet T3 roughly 10cm^2. With a pulse header, turbo dodge guys on ancient cylinder heads with 2.3 liters of displacement can spool a HX35 by 3300rpm. Both have 4" inlet and the big 2.5" outlet that is on the GT42R and other gigantic turbos. Both typically have internal wastegates, but the stock actuators are set to just under 30psi. Both end with industry standard V-band discharges, usually 3", some have an elbow that ends in a V-band (usually HY35s do) some do not. Both flow as well or better then comparable Garrett GT turbos, but cost less then half as much in many cases and even less when you include the money saved for having the factory V-band outlet and included internal wastegate assembly.

In summary: Holset turbos kick ass.

IMO, you are right. This would make a great thread for basic turbo information. I know someone around here has a link to that site with all the compressor maps hosted. If someone were to read up on the Garrett site about compressor maps and want to compare common turbos, they could do both throuh this thread.

Here is a helpful link to flow and horsepower ratings for common dsm turbos. There is also a link on this site to a directory of compressor maps. I hope this helps granted it is a few years old.

Very useful calculator for giving you a very good idea of what sort of turbo to look for.
