94692, Hahn Universal FMIC. Is It Worth It?
Posted by biggnasty, Apr-27-06 06:46 AM
I'm currently looking hardcore (just 2 more paychecks) into getting the Hahn Stage II turbo kit with the FMIC. Their FMIC requires me to cut my bumper reinforcement and my bumper cover. Also it looks as if the intercooler with piping is just over 1000.00 bucks.

I know that they say its good because of no crossover pipe that block air to the top of the intercooler, but I'd like to hear from real people who actually have it. And if its really worth it. Or should I just go with another cheaper FMIC and save the cash for more upgrades.

Please someone help out before I make the wrong decision.

Why bother with the universal? Buy the 2GNT specific model. Easier install, premade piping.

OR

Buy a cheaper IC off ebay and buy some sweet ass piping and an LSD with the $750 you'll save :)

Thats what I'd do. :P

I have the Univeral Hahn FMIC and i'm very pleased with it. Even in hot weather and 15 psi boost, the intake temps are only around 100-105 degrees. Both the Universal, and the actual FMIC that is specific made for our cars, are really the same core, size, and flow rate. If you want ease of install, and premade piping, the ready made IC is the way to go. I've installed one, and its really fairly easy to do. Now on mine, i had to custom make some mounting brackets, custom make my own piping, and do all that work. Although more work, I did save several hundred dollars. If money wasnt an issue, i'd of picked up the ready made one for sure. I have a welder, and everything to custom make piping, so it was no big deal for me...

I'm going to be using a military hobby shop on DM. So a little custom work doesnt rub me the wrong way. What I am concerned with is cost. I'll basically be taking all of my deployment money to buy the full kit with fmic.

Also, I want to run 10 psi on stock internals. I was wondering if the only way to get away with that is to use HAHN's FMIC?

One more thing. I'm installing the 97-99 bumper on my 95 rs when I get back. Would you cut the bumper for the HAHN FMIC before or after painting? And... Am I putting my life at risk by cutting the bumper reinforcement to install this FMIC?

If money is an issue I wouldn't run 10psi on stock internals. That's just asking for a rebuild.

I have it, it's worth ever penny. Buy the 2GNT specific model with the pipes. The intercooler is HUGE and you won't have to deal with making pipes.

About the bumper... You can either spend time cutting it away or just remove it entirely. It all depends on how much you trust yourself not to hit stuff.

Yea I just completely took mine off, I thought the piping hit if I didn't maybe I just didn't line it up right at first. But yes the intercooler is worth the money.

Don't forget to pick up a dozen or so hose clamps, with my stage 1 kit that I got 3 years ago and the FMIC I got 2 years ago they both came with the worst hose clamps I have ever seen. Also, the 2 rubber couplers (one attaches to the turbo the other one is below the fuse box) are known to break, both of mine did. You will need 2 real nitrle / silicon elbows, 2.25" inner diameter, 90 degrees.

I might sell my HRC FMIC with piping in a week or two. Complete with everything you need.

Thanks alot guys. I am definately getting the Kit with the FMIC. I dont know what I was thinking. When I get back to the states its going to be summer, and in tucson highs hit around 118F in july! I'd probably overheat really easy with a SMIC or none.

But thanks for the advise.

Overheat as in heatsoak? Two very different things. Since you are going with a fmic no you get to deal with restricted airflow to your radiator. Its pretty fn humid here in ohio and i have issues with cooling so i'd imagine you'll be dealing with the same thing in AZ.

In that case, I recommend fabbing up some ducting in between your FMIC and your radiator (also think about getting an aluminum one, like a Fluidyne). I used some sheet metal and pop riveted it up. It came out awesome (and I spray painted it black, so you can't even notice it) and I will not have any overheating issues with this setup.
