94463, If Your Turbo And Don't Have High Flow Cat... GET ONE Posted by EclipseTenzoR, Apr-10-06 07:27 PM
I just got my 2.5" high flow cat installed and holy freaking cow. Talk about opening up a shit load of power. The car pulls like a freaking raped ape now. I am only boosting 5psi and let me tell you, this is now one of the best bolt ons I could have added to the turbo setup. Cruising from 50mph it takes no time at all to hit 100mph a matter of a few seconds, its just amazing how much more the car wants to pull now, with little effort at all.

Or just get a cutout. Best of both worlds imo.

Yea a cutout deffintley would be nice. As of now I am rocking the 3" apexi, the 2.5" cat, and 2.5" downpipe. I am plenty satsified for now, its pretty scary actually how quick it accerlates now with out being open throttle. I think next mods are going to be udp, bored tb and then i'll work towards going stage 2

Yes very sad but true, my car is auto and I don't drive many turbo cars. And truthfully I think that if I drove a faster turbo car I would probably spend alot more money to improve my car to that level, or I would be disgusted with the lack of power my car has. I am satisfied for now though. There is alot of things I want to do, but its tough to choose what to do first. As far as auto, yes its tragic but I am trying to take care of that now.

yea it kinda sucks since that last car i owned had 400 + ft lbs of torque always on tap. now whenever i drive anything else, i comapre it to that. my RS is nothing compared to it. i ride in all my buddies turboed high revving 4 cylinder cars and i am just like, whats the big deal?lol dont drive anything faster than what you own or you will spend everything you have to try and make it that fast. lol

Yea, I hear you about more power, I drove a ford mustang cobra the other day and as nice as it was, I still like my eclipse more. Someday it will be much quicker. But the project ahead is what keeps me motivated.
Edit: By the way I wouldnt be so quick to shit no the eclipse, because your comparing your base gs to a big block. Of course your car will seem like crap. But keep in mind the amount of people on this board and all over that have put the work into the same car you own and have proved it time and time again. It takes time and patience but it has the potential to own as well.

Here's the solution to your problem. And it's in Florida so you won't have to pay shipping.

If you're looking to get less backpressure after the turbo just keep the stock cat for emissions testing and put a test pipe in. It's a lot cheaper than buying a "high flow" cat.

I have an obx cat. I bought it from a member here for $25 not sure if it was ment for the n/t or if it was really for the turbo model because this required slight modification. You can get it on ebay for like $50. Works great, no cel and I am very impressed. The flanges didnt line up rite so what the exhaust shop did was attached the cat to my apexi exhaust, cut the end part off of the custom downpipe, bolted that flange they cut off to the cat and then rewelded the pipe back up once they had it all alighned. So alignment was'nt perfect but it worked out great. Only payed $50 for the install at a local shop

i don't know how far you plan on increasing HP, but i'm sorry to tell you i'd save money on doing a manual transmission swap. let me tell you, people that over power that tranny goes to crap. it's happend to me long time ago, when i tried boosting past 10psi that was it. i had 2 auto trany rebuilds and i ended swapping to manual which costed me cheaper than rebuilding the auto tranny. plus it was a night and day difference in power.

Well if I can come across all the parts for a good price I may do it within the next month or so. Problem is I can't find people who have the parts or the ones I do they dont get back to me on pricing. The great part is I found a shop down here that can do the swap, and did swap for r34eclipse's car, he recomended them so thats good for me.

Not a great choice if the end user always takes the car to a shop to do any work. I know a lot of shops and exhaust places won't mess with test pipes. Some of the mom & pop ones might look the other way though. Swapping out test pipes every year or 2 is better left for those who do their own work.

The thing is so easy to switch out...takes less than 30 minutes. If I am really lazy and I need Satan to do something mundane I always put the cat back in. If anyone else other than me is going to look at it there should be a cat there.

I second that :thumbsup Having a high flowing exhaust system definitely helps, especially if you're turbo'd.

I know, the guy is back from the grave. Hes got some work to do, we have a megasquirt to put on my car :) (you should know since you built it, ha).
If swapping out a test pipe for a cat once a year is to hard of a job then you dont deserve a turbo car. If your just completely lazy and want a quick swap then put a v-band flange on each end and the swap would take 5 minutes.

Guys... there is NO emissions testing in Florida!!!
There used to be many years ago, but the state figured it cost more than it was worth and is no more. SOooooooooo, get a Test Pipe and LEAVE IT IN!
No cat here :) - J

Yeah, high flow cats or test pipes make a huge difference. I'm running a 3" "high flow cat" (which you can look straight through) and a full 3" Greddy EVO exhaust. The boost response when I first did it was amazing. Now, toss in a Retrofit LSD and the car hooks up pretty quick. Toss you around in the seat between shifts, that's for sure :thumbsup

I am auto as well and the take off sucks balls compared to the GS-T. I think I will try this mod since its not expensive at all. Did the high flow make your car louder?

What about if your NOT turbo'd? Wouldnt you lose your low end tourqe?I know its a little off subject, and I am NOT staying N/A. I just want to know because I have 2 other friends that are staying the N/A route. Also...
Wouldnt having a high flow exhaust system kill your low end on a turbo car making it slower in the low end untill your turbo spooled up? Most of my N/A races were wont on low end.

It's a little different with a turbo... the less crap after the turbine the better.
