Okay, i spent a little time this evening messing with houston 2GNT's new datalogger, on Joe's car.

I'm having a little trouble figuring this thing out. I'm a datalogger virgin, so i'm not too clear on what i'm doing or what i'm supposed to be looking for. Can any of you guys give me some pointers, advice, tips? What things just don't work for our cars? Any manufacturer specific data files i should download? WTF am i doing? LOL

When you plug the datalogger in, it can only see the options that are available for that car. It automatically shows you what the ecu sees.

For example, my roomate's pocketlogger shows airflow in lbs. per minute (what the MAS measures), on his 4G63. And it sees Manifold Absolute Pressure on my car. It automatically shows you what the car can record and monitor.
So when you plug it in to different cars, it will pick up on everything that can be monitored through the info port in the dash.

When you want to monitor or log the data from the car, you go through the menus and options and select what aspects of the car you want to record; such as timing, o2, air flow, intake temp, etc. It will only record what you check off.

I know its kind of hard to understand through a message board, but that is the jist of how it works. You really need to just plug it in and play with it :)

Nah, it's cool. We just haven't had a chance to sit down and look at it all. just need playtime.

What we need to do is get a baseline.. somebody mostly stock and datalog them to tune against. At this point i have no idea if 15 degrees advance at WOT, 14PSI in the middle of Joe's second gear is good or not..

I can unhook my afc so we can get an AT baseline too. It's nice and simple to unhook. You guys are having too much with that thing on the wrong side of town ... we get all the toys after I start working ... now that just doesn't seem fair.

Dino, I wrote a thread about the same thing a while ago but nobody replied to that point...

My timing is pulled to 15 degrees at WOT too. I think that is as far as the ECU can take it. I want to see someone with a stock car datalog in order to see if that happens all the time, or if we are just getting enough knock to force the ecu to retard timing as much as possible.

If it is a direct result of knock, I am beating the shit out of my engine :) and apparently Joe is too.

Can our ECU's be reprogrammed?? I was wondering, I will need something to handle 625cc injecters but if our ecu's can be reprogrammed to handle that then I dont need that Accel DFI or the Haltech E6k or whatever it is...

Nope. DFI or a E6K is the only way.

Actually,

Part of the problem is that is all our car can pull timing. No matter how much knock you get it can not pull timing past 15deg, or so it seems. This is something we saw on Armonds Avenger as well. With the MSD, you can pull more timing out. Now what you should be seeing to be honest I do now know. I have no idea what my timing is either. :( I need to datalog my car some when I get home just so that I can see.

Well the entire point is not to pull your timing :) you want it at least in the high teens.

Its great that the MSD can do that, but you'll end up going slower in the long run. Less boost and better timing makes for a much faster car than gobs of boost and crap for timing.
The idea would be so the car doesn't need to retard the timing. There should be no knock.

Doesn't anyone out there have a stock car they can datalog?

I might give Hahn a call and see what he thinks.

This weekend sometime (probably Friday night before i start drinking ;-) ) we're going to datalog both Thura's mostly-stock auto RS and Jason's mostly-stock 5spd GS. Nothing they have should cause the ECU to pull timing.

We'll see what we see.. And i'll keep you informed.

I just looked at a couple of my datalogged passes from this summer. Right after launching the timing drops right to 15 degrees and stays there for the most part while at WOT. I wonder if the ecu does this automatically at "x" throttle position to eliminate the chance of knock since the ecu doesn't use the knock sum for anything else. Maybe that's why our motors grenade so well at the first sign of detonation. Any thoughts?
