I'm in the process of turboing my '99 RS. I picked up some fittings for my log style manifold at the local parts place. When I got home I noticed they were galvanized. I didn't feel like bringing them back so I just went ahead and tack welded them in place. I then had a friend tig weld them together. On another forum someone told me that galvanized fittings couldn't be used to make a manifold. They said it would be too hot and the metal would melt and screw up my turbo. So my question is can I use the fittings or was that other guy right? Also I need definate answers, because if he was right I don't want to have to find out the hard way. Thanks.

Take a tortch to it and see if it will peel off.

If I find out it's okay to use it I'm going to take a Dremel and grind down the inside of it as well as the outside.

galvanizied is just a coating (zinc and iron) applied to the steel that keeps it from rusting.

You should get some heavy duty weld els and build one from there. with a 5/8" think flange.

Be careful heating up that galvined coating, when you burn it off it produced Zinc gas that has been known to cause cancer.

Yeah it can screw with your nervous system if you don't weld it in a well vented area.

Yeah I looked for some weld els, but couldn't find any. These are pretty heavy duty though. I would guess they're atleast 3/8" thick. I guess they'll be okay if I make sure to grind the inside out real good. Thanks for all the help guys.

Yeah. That's what he uses at work, but he did it at trade school. He said it was pretty tough to weld.

it wont work imo...i was just doing the same thing and a proffesional welder said it will crack in a heartbeat...the galvanized is probalby actually the cast steel underneath which is filled with air pockets. also, it wont expand and contract the same as the metal you used to weld it let alon the flange, so it will crack the welds and warp the flange.... i decided to spend the money and do it right and get the weld-els. they worked much better and look a lot better, plus, there's more room to actually tighten the bolts...

Turbonetics has a manifold for the non turbo 95-99 listed ontheir site.

Take that manifold to a piping supply store or into your basement if it isnt finished. That pipe kinds resembles your water pipe doesnt it! That guy sold you galvanized water pipe t-fittings. You got ripped IMO.

BTW, Im surprised your buddy agreed to weld this, if he welds for a living then he ought to know that a) Galvanized prodices poison gas, and b) he ought to understand expansion ratios.

What were you going to use as a flange?

I thought I said earlier I tossed that idea. I dunno if I did or not though. Anyway it's fine to weld it in a well ventilated area. Also I'm talking to someone now about a mani anyway.
