I know I've posted up about oil coolers before and got a ton of different responses/opinions.

I'm thinking about using an automatic radiator (I have a manual car) and running the extra coolant lines over to a custom milled adaptor that would mount to the oil filter plate. I happen to know a guy who works at a titanium CNC lab. :thumbsup I'm just wondering if anyone on here has done anything like that and what kind of sucess they've had with it?

sounds like a cool idea but is the oil to thick to run through suck small ports on a radiator if not should work good

No, I'm not planning to run the oil to the radiator - too much hosing. I'm running coolant to the oil filter assembly before the from the turbo return would feed back into the pan. It should help cool it down a bit. Most factory turbo cars from the factory come this way already. I'm hoping someone on here has attempted this before me. I want to know how effective it is before I put in all the time and find out it only lowers oil temps 10 degrees.

let the fact that more than 98% of us turbo guys DO NOT run any type of oil cooling system, and have done so for years guide you in "the need for one" dept.

AND, once again, oil temps to low are just as bad as to high.
since we have all been running around for years turbo'd and not had any ned to lower oil temps, i'd say you're fine and any work you do beyond installing a small actual oil cooler for the "coolness factor" only would be a waste of time and money.

Rather then your original idea.......this is handy way to drop a few degrees and add almost a quart and a half of extra capacity to the system. (Dual oil filter remote mount)

I know most 2gnt guys don't really use one ... heck, I didn't for the past few years ... but after blowing a crankshaft from what seemed to be poor lubrication I'm a bit more cautious about my oil temps and a bit more nervous since I just rebuilt my third motor. I'm not spending all this money again just to be "turbo".

do you have an oil temperature guage installed? if so what was it reading without an oil cooler, that should tell you if you are in need of one

An ATX Rad dosen't have an extra coolent lines.

Chris, check out a search for oil cooling, there was that one guy who did a custom one, but then again he took out every support bracket pretty much for the front of his car.

Yes, and ATX does have an extra coolant line for the tranny itself. I've swapped a motor in a ATX Eclipse, I've seen it.

EDIT: Geo, I did a pretty extensive search already on here, but I really found guys using the Perma-cool kits and making them work with an adaptor plate ... I'm interested in a bit more of a custom route, at least custom to a higher degree.

The extra fittings at the bottom of the rad are for the tranny fluid. The tranny fluid flows out of the tranny through the bottom tank of the rad and back to the tranny. If you unhook those lines you wont get any coolent out of them.

Ok, whether the lines are filled with coolant or tranny fluid is not the point, the point is that there additional lines on a ATX rad that *can* be used. I'd like to use them to my advantage somehow b/c they don't require the fabrication of anything additional - they're already there.

Suie - thanks for the photos man, there great. I'll have to get you some points. They at least give me some things to think about. It looks like you took out the AC condenser - true? I've been toying with removing the AC too since I'm not getting much air to the engine bay with a FMIC as it is.

My car is garaged for the winter and is actually off insurance, so I've got some time to think about this. But I want to come up with something that is going to work effectively and simply. I'm really NOT worried about making the oil too cool. My EGT's tend to float anywhere between 800 -1300 depending on boost, driving style, etc ... the point is with oil passing through a turbo that makes exhuast temp around 1000 degrees it's bound to make your oil hot. I'd like to cool it down a bit more before dumping it back into the oil pan. There's no way it'll get *too cool* to be a dangerous in the few seconds it'll travel before re-entering the oil pan, it just won't happen.

Permacool generic oil cooler. High pressure hoses from Napa. Ford Mustang oil filter relocation kit. The oil filter is next to the intercooler, under the passenger fender. The filter was actually for an F150 ;)

how much extra oil did that take again?

2 extra quarts.

filter relocation kit is a good idea for the 2.4 swappers, for the extra capacity and the stratus pump holds the filter in a rather unsafe position in our engine bays.

heh i buy most of the stuff for my car off ebay, i love ebay, not a bad transaction yet

I used Ebay for things as well, and I haven't had problems with transactions either ... but, when it comes to car parts/acessories I usually buy new from Exile or Summit. That way you know what you're getting, you know it *really* is new, and you have leverage with warranties and stuff. Just my opinion from my experiences.

yea i agree it is kind of taking a gamble, but with all the stuff they have like paypals buy back thing and viewable user ratings it's getting really safe. I won't buy from anyone with less than 98% positive ratings and over 1000 transactions
