92097, Want to talk to guys with the IHI RHB5 Turbo Setup Posted by Stealthfox, Dec-14-05 07:37 AM
Just wanted to ask a few questions about this turbo.
1) I know there are a few of you on here running them. I've talked to one person who made a flange to connect right to their stock exhaust manifold. Does anyone run a different manifold setup???
2) Any problems to be away of with this particular turbo setup that I should watch out for when I'm puttin it on???
3) Some numbers you guys are putting down (psi, 1/4, whp, etc.)
Thanks guys

I know of one guy who used that compressor but quickly changed it out for something bigger. I think he ran a 15.2 or something.

he ran 15s with the IHI and then switched to a 14B, also on his stock manifold, and then ran 14s

i ran 14.3 on IHI , then switched to a 14b and ran 13.9 , both were on stock manifold.

First thing is first about this turbo. This is by no means a big numbers turbo, but I can guarentee it will be a blast to drive around the street. If you're concerned with bigger numbers, before you even turbo the car, consider your internals. If you don't want to get forged internals, then stick with the rhb5, 14b, 13b or t3 equivilant and keep the boost below 7 psi. It all depends on how much you want to spend and what your goals are. But as I said, if you're looking for a fun turbo with super quick spool then this is the turbo for you. Just don't boost too much on it, or you'll be blowing worthless hot air into your engine.

Good point. Sometimes everyone gets tied up with 1/4 times. What does the 14b spool at??? I would much rather have a turbo that I can reach full boost before redline. LOL. seriously I'm looking for a comprimise between numbers and the joy of driving it. If the 14b spools at 3K, I dont think it will bother me. I want to be able to spool somewhere in the middle, not to high rpms and not too low. Also are the flanges close to set up either, because if all the other components are the same (FMU, injectors, etc.) maybe I'll set up the IHI first and then if I dont like it go to the 14b. I'm just not sure anymore. I want a happy medium between 1/4 times and "funbility" of the car.

As far as the flanges go: It really depends on what kind of car you get the RHB5 off of. I got mine off a Subaru, and it has some weird looking exhaust housing flange. If you're still in the market, try to find one off a mid-late 80's Ford Thunderbird/Escort turbo or Mazda 626 GT turbo as I believe they basically have a t3 flange. Check out http://www.homemadeturbo.com/turbo_projects/ for a LOT of really good info on custom turbo setups. With either setup you're going to have a blast with it, both turbo's offer nice, quick spool. But all in all, the 14b is going to give you more top-end power, so there's a lot more room to play around with it.

Well I'm thinking about putting either one on my stock manifold with a custom flange that i'll make. Are these turbos that close that if i didn't like one, that I could switch to the other fairly easily because the flange is close and the piping would be pretty close???

If the flanges are close I'll try one turbo and then switch to the other if I dont like one of them.

Sorry about the late reply, but here goes. The Subaru RHB5 turbo has a triangular exhaust flange and the Ford ones have a t3 flange.

i would just go with a 14b, you'll be able to get more power out of it and it will still spool very fast. I've got a 20g turbo and even that hits full boost in the mid-rpm range, so spool should not be a problem

have you used the ihi rhb5 turbo? cause i had one and was going to use it on my eclipse but the flange was not a t3. it looked like a t3 but it was more like a mit flange. i went with a t3 anyways. check it out aginst a t3 flange and you will see.

Not that familiar with the flanges. The RHB5 I have still has the stock manifold of whatever it came off of. The manifold is weird because the exhaust port for cylinders 1 and 2 and close to each other, then theres a space, then 3 and 4 are close to each other. It might be from a ford I'm not sure.
The 14b sounds like it will solve my problem, and I'm guessing that the 14b also has a t3 flange on it as well. I'll look into that.
