92026, Bringing back the Twin Turbo Question
Posted by Diltzy, Dec-13-05 03:25 AM
Ok ok ok... i know this was posted like 10 times cuz yes i think i am the only BANME! who actually reseaches b4 i post so i don't get flamed and yelled at and basically have my self esteem ruined.

I'm not really interested in twin turboing my 420a cuz i'd b happy w/ just one turbo on it but i read alot about people who wanted 2 twin turbo theirs and i'm just wondering if any of these people have actually gone through with this or if anyone has any pics of some twin 420a's

Keep this in mind though do not flame me because i'm not really looking 2 twin my eclipse i'm just being curious

no one has done it and no one will.
its just some want to think they have supras or something.

with the advances in turbos there is really no point in running twin turbos now.

maybe on a v configuration motor not an inline where all cylinders exit on the same side.

I almost twinned mine when I was sitting there with 2 t-25's and my welder who was making my manifold/downpipe.

He wanted to do it, but I thought a t25 on 2 cylinders might take forever to spool and theres really no controling them other than the wastegates set a 7psi...

Plus it's ALWAYS better to run a single , larger turbo

IMO

You're a newb! deal with it! You'll have to put up with that for the next few months, unless you show that you have a deep appreciation for the search function

The REASON there hasn't been and never will be a twin turbo 420a, is because it is a stupid and pointless project. Using the search function here as well as searching the internet about twin turbo 4 cylinders would have yielded you an answer about why this is pointless. Now knowing that it is in fact a dumb move to make, do you think there would be anyone dumb enough to just slap on two turbo's to their car? Turbocharging a car takes a certain amount of knowledge to do so. 99.999% of people that have this knowledge know better than to put 2 turbo's on a 4 cylinder.

Did you even read his post? Guess not...

Yes I read his post, and the one that got deleted. I explained WHY there is no twin turbo 420a's. I also explained that if you use the search function and actually knew how turbo systems work, then you wouldn't ask where the twin turbo 420a's are because you would know that there is/shouldn't be any. I did not say "you shouldn't do it", although this post should help discourage others to not do so and to also use the search function here and other places on how to turbo their car. Maybe you didn't read MY post...

with two turbos all you're encouraging is more backpressure, and with that a lot of negative things can and likely will happen. one being reversion of exhaust gasses back up into the intake.

there are many more advantages to running a SINGLE turbo on a 4cyl like ours over a twin, and they far outweigh the headache of both tuning, and fitting a twin setup.

with the technology of turbos these days, with ball bearing and some crazy types of plastic compressor wheels...a properly sized turbo wont have much lag at all. besides, we're fwd...and most of us with turbos dont have traction for shit in 1st or 2nd.

the reason you dont see it done, is because even though it might look badass....its more of a design error than anything else.

WINNER.

Well, I don't know that it's really an issue with traction as much. Even if it was a turbo smaller than a t25, I don't think our motors could really spool a turbo from 2 cylinders very quickly at all. I believe it's more for the other obvious reasons. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

well i mean, i guess the only advantage i can think of to a twin turbo setup on cars like a 3000gt or supra is because of the response? shit...i dont know. what is the point, anyway?

my point was that even if say two teenie turbos can respond fast, or either a bi setup like the S4...it wont matter because even if it does work and make any good power down low real quick...its not going to be able to do much with it anyway, it'll just roast tires.

all you need is one these days

...advantages? disadvantages? weigh it out...

The point would be to linearize power output. The normal auto customer doesn't want a vehicle suffering from boost lag. Therefore, two turbos of different size and flow can better control throttle response and driveability. Imagine if it was wet out and some clueless mom or dad had to slam on the gas to avoid an accident. With a single, larger turbo they'd have to wait for the adequate exhaust pressure and when the turbo finally does kick in they could potentially be finding themselves in an even worse predicament. Wheel spin & loss of control go hand in hand with fright and unpredictable actions. It's all a matter of safety.
