9083, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!! Posted by loeric18_2000, Nov-10-01 11:19 AM
My engine blew today. 8lbs of boost on HRC stage two kit with fmic. I was going to Disney World and the car started to spputter on I-95. I pulled over and the inside on the engine bay was covered with oil.It seems as thought the head gasket failure caused a surge of back pressure through the turbos and there was about one quart of oil in my intercooler. We removed the bumper and all the piping including the IC. We tried to take off the head and valve cover but the damn 420A piece of shit would not come off! Does anyone know how the get the thing off? It seems to be suck in the back somewhere. I'll post the picks later. BTW I didn't have an air fuel gauge.

BTW I >didn't have an air fuel >gauge.
There is your problem. (obviosuly). If you want your engine to be happy, you MUST monitor at least your Air fuel ratios and your EGTs. Improper tuning is disasterous.
How did you have oil in your intercooler? Where is your crankcase plugged in?

I am trying to figure out how the hell did the oil get into all the pipings and IC. I don't know what do you mean by carnkcase plugin, can you explain that? I have oil in the turbo, tb, bov, and all the pipes. I will have the pics up in a min.

9086, RE: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!! Posted by Fast420A, Nov-10-01 12:12 PM
You probably had major blow by due to bad rings and burned a lot of oil. Running out of oil is a common problem with our cars. How often where you checking the oil and changing it? What can you not get off, Valvecover? Take off the Coil pack and all the bolts and it should come up. It might be a little tight though. Don't Stick a screw driver in a pry it up because you might damage the head or valve cover. Getting the valve cover off is about a 10 minute job with the right tools (Deep well socket). If you have any other questions, ask.

LAST EDITED ON 10-Nov-01 AT 06:36 PM (PST)Sorry about that.. I meant where does the line from your crankcase go? Did you plug it back into your air filter?
There are a few possibilities for all that oil getting into your IC.
1. If your crankcase line is plugged into your air filter, and enough oil came out, the turbo could be sucking it back into the IC pipes and into the IC.
2. Your PCV was dumping a crapload of oil back into the intake and it somehow made its way down into your IC.
3. A seal in your turbo blew/came loose and leaked oil into the compressor housing, which was then pushed into the intercooler.
4. Your pistons/rings are shot and pushed enough oil out your intake and down the IC pipes to lock up your bearings...
All four of those possiblilites would take a ton of oil to happen. I would think the 4th option is the most likely.
What kind of headgasket problems were you having?

Yeah thats a lot of oil.
Why is your oil feed line for the turbo disconnected? Did you do that while taking the car apart?
I guess its time to take the head off and look for damage. Sorry man.

these are the 12 bolts that i took out from crankcase. 8 x 8mm, 4 x 10mm for coilpack. anything else? yes the crankcase plugged into the intake(the way that HRC kit sets up). I found some metal shavings in the oil, so I would think it's some serious internal damage. The car does not start up, will a broken turbo seal do that? I have to completely stock 420A the HG is stock. I know don't lecture I should have bought the A/F gauge. I have EGT, S-afc but not A/F guage how stupid. Anyway, hope it just blown pistons or piton rings. Hope the cylinder walls and rods are fine. Do i have to resleeve if I put JE 8.8cr pistons?

9092, RE: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!! Posted by Fast420A, Nov-10-01 12:53 PM
From what I can tell you got all of the bolts, try getting a rag under the edge of the valve cover and pulling it up. Sometimes in will be kind of stuck. As far as the metal shavings go, could be crank or rod bearings are fucked up, maybe even the pistons siezed up. I wouldn't try to start it up because you could do more damage. If the turbo is the part that is messed up the car should still start but if the car won't physically start than it's an internal thing.

No, a broken oil seal won't do that. You have a blown 420a on your hands.
As long as there are no deep gashes in the cylinder walls, you can just overbore to .020 and install the JE pistons. If you are going to do that however, you will want more powerful rods to accompany the package.
Actually you don't need an AF gauge if you have the SAFC. Do the blue wire mod and you can view your A/F ration right on the screen.

before the engine stop, I heard some weird noises. I thought Iran over some little rocks, so didn't care. Then I saw the white smock came out of my tail, i didn't believe it, so I give a little gas to see if my car really made that smoke(I know, stupid and bad idea). Then the engine deied. I opened up the hood, there was smoke came out the air filter. But the weird thing was my egt was only 550~600 degree C. I really don't know what actually happened. Datenation maybe......

9095, RE: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!! Posted by Erik, Nov-10-01 02:58 PM
sounds like bearing failure. EGTs would have probably gone up if it were det. just for shits and giggles pull your pan and look up. That will give you a decent idea of cylinder wall damage. Sorry to hear. Hope it's just a broken piston ring-land.

9096, RE: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!! Posted by Fast420A, Nov-10-01 03:11 PM
Is there a hole in the block anywhere? Mine did the whole white smoke deal when my motor blew. I had a 1 inch by 1 inch hole on the block from the rod.

LAST EDITED ON 10-Nov-01 AT 10:38 PM (PST)That really did "boom" on ya.
Never have been a fan of the EGT after the turbo, I must say. I'm sure looking at the EGT's wasn't the first thing you looked at when you heard the "rocks." I'm with everyone else as to a reason though. Maybe it was attributable to oil starvation if it wasn't a lean fuel detonation.
Did you ever have any symptoms of heavy blow-by or engine knock before this fatal incident? Also, what kind of pull were you doing driving wise?
At least now you have an excuse for an engine build-up. Keep us updated...

LAST EDITED ON 11-Nov-01 AT 09:37 AM (PST)Thanks alot for the input guys.
I just had 100miles after oil changed(10w-30).
there wasn't any symptom before it happened, it ran like a bull, no audiable knok, very smooth. The only thing is when I started the engine in the cold mornings(60) the rmp bounced like it's going to stall, but only for like 10sec. I think it's releted to cold temp.
I was crusing 80mph on Hwy, passed 1 car ,wasn't full boosting, and let go right away. After about 30sec~1min this happened.
>ahhh, u know u ghetto if, ummm, u try to salvage oil in a sprite bottle. 9D9 MITSU RS: I know I should put into coke bottles, so the color looks alike(j/p). I was collecting the oil to let the shop see it, so they might be able to know what to look for damages. I know I have to rebuild it anyway, can anyone list parts for rebuilding a motor, and reasonable price parts/labor? I have no expiernce of doing it, don't want to get screwed like I paid $1500 for turbo insatll(alot of you might remember me know).

9103, RE: taht sucks Posted by Stan2gnt, Nov-11-01 05:29 AM
The fact that you heard noises in the crankcase (mine sounded like nuts and bolts in the crankcase) and all the oil was OUTSIDE the engine thats exactly what it sounds like, bearing failure due to oil starvation. Course something caused oil starvation 1rst. I dont think it was detonation, not with those EGTs and highway driving.

what can cause oil starvation??
|
9105, RE: taht sucks Posted by klipzracer, Nov-11-01 05:43 AM
that's what it is. same thing happened to the GSX. detonation shot the rings, massive blow-by shot out all the oil, enginge has no oil, lock up and Bing, Bing......pistons freeve up in cylinder walls and the crank rips the rods right outta the pistons.

the engine had no oil in it due to the fact you blew it all outta the engine from blow-by.

Not putting oil in the car as the engine blows it out...

Its only been a couple months since you turboed it. That sucks!!! Hope everything goes well. Just think....Now you will have your internals built up and then you can run 10 or even more psi safely. All this talk about blowing stuff up is starting to scare me a little.

Oil Starvation can be caused by a physical leak ir burning oil. Either way you ran out of oil and thats a bad thing. I have to add at least 1 qt per week.

it's wierd. I never had problem with burning oil, and just had last oil change less than 100 miles. Hopefully, me and my friends will have time to take the head out somethings this week, and we will figure out what happened. I am looking to get pistons, rods, and crank up the boost. Does anyone know if I have to resleeve for JE pistons? How much boost does stock sleeve hold up? Dave, do you know any good shop that does rebuild?
|
9112, RE: taht sucks Posted by JasonESi_T, Nov-11-01 02:51 PM
We don't have honda motors with weak piston sleeves. (You've been talking to too many civic owners) No need to do any lower block resleeving so long as there isn't any damage that a little .020 over reboring won't cure.
If however, you did so much damage as to require new sleeves, I woudn't bother salvaging the old lower block. Just buy a new one off any other 420a and rebuild it instead.
The piston sleeves are worth at least the 500+HP HRC is running through their 420a.

I really need to find some good shops in the area, which can do good jobs with fair price. Let me know if you have any suggustions. I went to Ram's, Rob qouted me $850 labor for replacing pistons/rings, rods, PP the head, and cleaning up all the pipes,tb.
