So I have been thinking and now that I am turbo'd this boost bug is biting me. But I want to keep the boost at 5psi for now. My question is what kind of increase in power could I see from adding additional bolt ons. The bolt ons I am thinking about would be a UDP, Jeep Throttle Body, MSD Coil, Iridium plugs, and a Front Mount. I am just curious at the moment to see how much power I can push on the stock block with simple bolt ons rather than turn the boost up. So how much do you think these things could help out considering I have a hahn stage 1 with custom 2.5" downpipe and apexi n1 3" cat back

For a turbo to be efficent as possible the piping has the be the same size as the compressor outlet. "Fo sample" if the outlet of your compressor housing is 2" for the turbo to be most efficent the piping should be 2" and the tb should be 2". You can get it but you will lose a bit of torque and gain some top end. But then again the udp will free up some bottom end, I guess they kinda level out. To be honest I dont know how much the bolt ons would free up. Personally I would do the intercooler first.

as far as the ic is concerned, i would think that it would be better to just stick with an oem smic while you keep the boost low because it is cheap and can handle the power pretty good. there really wouldnt be all that much of a reason to put an fmic on for 5 psi other than looks.

the only difference between a Stage I kit boosting 5psi and a Stage II kit boosting 8psi, is that one has an intercooler and the other doesn't... with colder air, you can boost more, and make more additional power then you would with all of those other bolt-ons combined... sooo uhh yeah, who said the intercooler won't help?

And stage 2 uses a different actuator than stage 1 too.
EDIT: And as injen was saying, for 5 psi, a smic should do about as much as a fmic. If he was doing more like 8 then I think a front mount would help out more than a side mount, but a side mount will be cheaper right now.

I agree that at 5 psi a front mount wont help much, but just to be an ass I will say it will help some. It is gonna help because like said earlier, at higher speeds it will cool down the air making it denser and letting more get in the engine, which gives you more power (duh).
Like i said though, it would help out so little right now that i personally wouldnt do it, it is too expensive, i am just being a smart ass since i havent been all day.:7

Uhhhh... FMIC! FMIC > SMIC. Tell me why in the world you would even bother routing piping for an SMIC. FMIC will be more efficient than a SMIC at any boost. Looks good, works good and it isn't really that much more expensive, and it also leaves room for bigger dreams. Also, once intercooled you can get that extra 3psi and a fair amount of HP along with it. Cooler/safer air + more boost = best bang for your buck.

oem smic-30 bucks ebay fmic-300 bucks
thats a 270 dollar difference there. unless you are going the starion fmic route, an oem smic is the smartest thing to do money wise for 8 psi.

At higher boost levels, yes. At 5 psi, a fmic won't be utilized as well as higher boost levels. And under $150?

That's still a hella lot cheaper. And if he ever decides to upgrade, he won't lose out on much money because he could sell it for probably that same price. You couldn't resell a fmic that is new for the same price you bought it for. That's common sense.

not saying that the intercooler wont help. read what i wrote, an ic is needed. i just think that its smarter to have an smic instead of an fmic if hes not going to go over 9 psi because an fmic at that power level is really only for looks. hrc even recommends sticking with an smic until you start hitting numbers that would require better airflow.

I say the oem smic like injen said as far as cost effective if that is in case the issue here is the money factor. I've read where a fmic isn't really being utilized when running only 5psi, as were a smic would be all you needed for that amount of boost.
It all just depends solely on how much you want to spend and what your future plans are for this setup.

Unless you like the look of it, there is no point in going with a FMIC at 5 psi. Especially considering if you hook up the internal wastegate on the S16g to the nipple coming off of the compressor like HRC tells you to do. The pressure drop you get from a FMIC will cause you to lose more power than you would running a SMIC. Definately don't put a FMIC on for power gain reasons when running 8 psi or less because you won't get any.

Totally agree with the oem fmic route IF FOR ECONOMIC REASONS and low Boost Apps.
BUT and fmic always looks good and Tenzo, your car looks totally hot, and even hotter with an fmic. YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT!!!

^^i agree, but, you could always cap the nipple on the compressor and run a vac line from the intake manifold to the wastegate or get a mbc so the turbo spools until the engine sees 5psi
also i think if your gonna get an intercooler and have a shop make the piping for you and weld on a flange for your bov, then you might as well get the fmic so you don't have to go through the same process again if your planning on upgrading down the line. however if your like me and don't mind piecing together something cheap that looks like hell b/c you won't need a fmic for quite some time then i would go the way of the side mount. your also gonna get a pressure drop from this too so a mbc or running the vac line to the manifold will keep you at your 5psi. Just my thoughts idk anything about differences in efficiency or anything, just what makes sense to me

I would have to disagre with the statment that at low boost a fmic won't give you any power. my buddy rolls a honda civic:-( but he has the greddy stage one kit at five psi, nad when he put a fmic on he got noticable horsepower. The weird thing is though, he lost no boost pressure by putting it on. i found that to be very strange:wtf

Why spend the money on a SMIC and custom piping when eventually you are going to turn up the boost and then need a FMIC. Save money in the long run and go ahead with the FMIC.

FYI I run 17 psi on the HRC side mount on pump gas daily and 26 psi on 110 with no knock (I've been doing it for 3 years now). It doesn't necessarily NEED to be replaced with more boost then 5 psi. Not saying it wouldn't do a better job at those boost levels but the SMIC is at least safe to use. In my case, I like it because I don't want everyone and their brother knowing I have a turbo on that car. My GSX though... thats a different story :)

Well my first cousin's friend's uncle's buddy drives a twin turbo 1971 Dodge Dart running 55 psi on stock internals with no intercooler. When he put the HUGE FMIC on, he lost 400 HP. Explain that one because I too find that to be very strange. ;)

As far as this thread goes, it all comes down to preference in the end. Since you know a FMIC and SMIC can handle up to 26psi safe and effectively. So take your pick and enjoy.
As far as the rest of the bolt-ons you were asking about in your initial post, it again depends on your personal intentions towards your increases to cost factor and final results you have set for your car. When I say personal intentions to your increases...I mean some people can tell and will pay for a 3 to 5 hp bump and some will not...just to elaborate on that a bit so no one misconstrues what I am trying to say!
So my final word would be to research all of the bolt-ons you specified and learn what their specific purpose is. Then I would do a search here on each specific bolt on and I am certain you will find the results you are looking for.
So have you reached the point of wanting to turn that boost up to at least 15 yet?

Yea I deffintley want to turn up the boost. A few days after I got the car back I saw a guy driving a gsx and hes like is it a gsx? I was like no 420a turbo.. we both made a pull and his was quick as shit.. 16psi on a t-28. I want my car to pull hard. Is the t-28 bigger than the s16g?
