Okay for those who don't know, I blew my damn stock motor when I spiked 10.5 psi.

Thanks to thedawg for referring me to AJ customs, where I ordered the bulk of the rebuild supplies.

Heres what i've got on the way:
JE Pistons .020 overbore 8.6:1 compression
Eagle Rods
Arp head and main studs
Clevite main and rod bearings
complete gasket set
Melling oil pump

What i have to source from the dealer:
Water pump
Tbelt tensioner
tbelt tensioner pulley (the idler and belt itself is already new)


Now, i plan on building it myself. I have an engine lift and stand. the motor is sitting in the engine bay on the upper mounts right now, otherwise completely disconnected from everything and ready to be pulled. I've rebuilt the head before, as well as ripped countless trannys out and apart and back together.

Do you guys think i'll be able to handle building this thing? I've read the "engine building for idiots" sticky in the perf/engine forum, and it seems pretty straight forward.

also, as far as machining goes, what do i need in addition to boring and honing?

nope. but here's what i payed. it was a bit more than i probably could have gotten it all for. but they're shipping monday, so i cant complain. howell said it'd be 3-6 weeks... fuck that.


pistons - 495 w/ rings
rods - 350
head studs - 110
main studs - 160
main bearings - 40
rod bearings - 25
head/upper gasket set - 130
bottom end gaskets - 45

for a grand total of 1355 shipped.

91.69 for the oil pump from summit. gotta go pick up a water pump and tensioner on monday.

i just have my fingers crossed that the .020 pistons will fit okay, as well as the bearings.

i'm NOT looking forward to building this damn thing.

I think that the only other things you could do as far as machine work would be hot tanking, and balancing.

another thing. as far as the plastigauging goes, how necessary is that keeping in mind that i never had any problems with the motor and assuming that the machined surfaces aren't gouged or anything? could i have the machine shop check out all that stuff? i dont know if i really feel all that comfortable with doing that myself.

Using the Plasti-Gauge stuff isnt that hard. You could have the machine shop check all of it, im sure they wouldnt mind for an extra fee but then you might as well have them assemble it. Just go grab a few packs of plasti-gauge from pep boys and Practice using it a few times on your blown engine and checking the clearance on those bearings. Let me know if you need any help Will. You doing this at home or at school? I usually have my blocks built at shops cause I want to be sure the machining is perfect.

well i'm doing it at school. but i might bring it back home if i cant find a decent machine shop. i may end up just having it assembled for me. at least the bedplate, crank and pistons/rods
