90319, Questions before turbo install Posted by DarkEclips96, Oct-04-05 11:53 AM
I talked to my friend who has a small garage and we are going to try and complete the installation this weekend. Just have a few questions on what left to buy with what money I have left.
1. Have the cartech but heard too many horrer stories, I cant afford a SFMU at this time so would upgrading to a Vortech FMU still be a good idea?
2. I dont want to blow my motor and I know my wastegate is set for 9psi. but run at 8psi cause of intercooler, I would like to lower this to like 6. http://www.denverspeed.com/wastegates.html. <--Is that the only way of doing this or is there something simpler.
3. Another reason to lower boost is cause Im still looking for a EGT that, is there anyway I can tap the manifold and plug it off till I buy one of would it just be easier to wait.
4. I have 26 lbs injectors that came with the kit, but everyone seems to go with 30lb or higher, will these do for the boost i want to run without causing problems?
5. Should I just go ahead and get the missing link so minimize problems.
6. Where you guys get the teflon paste?? places around here only have the tape.
You can probably tell im afraid im going to blow the motor up and I just cant afford a rebuild right now.

My friend is taking fluid mechanics, run a 3 inch intake pipe from the ic to the tb, that should lower your psi, how much I am not sure.

No. although im not sure what fluid mechanics has to do with it, You want smaller diameter pipe from your IC to your TB, the reason being is that the cooler air from the IC will be more condenced. it will not lower your PSi to have a bigger pipe. it will still charge that pipe to the PSI that your wastegate will allow. you will only have a big bottl-neck restriction for the air to flow around at the TB if you ran 3". that isnt preferable.

for 6 psi you can run your stock injectors . as for fmu its probably worth it to save a bit more and get the sfmu . you can get teflon paste at home depot .you should wait on the the egt gauge because you dont know what size hole you need to tap for the probe unless you know exactly which one your gettin then you can just plug it with a npt fitting . as far as the missing link ,i personally think it sucks . just build a voltage clamp ,it also a lot cheaper.

Yeah, I agree, I give a vote FOR the ML. I had the "black box" for like 2 weeks and then upgraded to the ML. No problems since and it took away my CEL. For 55 bucks, get the ML.
Teflon paste can be found at Home Depot (as mentioned) in the plumbing section. It comes in a black and white tube. Use it on all your fuel and oil fittings. I had an oil passage get blocked using teflon tape = bad experience.
26lbs injectors are fine for 6lbs. of boost. You won't be satisfied for long though - you'll want more boost and want to upgrade later. If you can't afford it right now my advice would be to save your money, use the Cartech regulator (if it's new you shouldn't have too much trouble just yet) and save the money you'd spend on an FMU for a SMFU and bigger injectors. I personally believe the reason the Cartechs get sloppy in their fuel management is b/c the fuel breaks down the diaphram inside over time. Just my opinion.
-or-
Spend the FMU money on an EGT now! An EGT guage is probably one of the most important gauges you can get. It'll tell you ton about your fuel situation and how your car is running. It's quite easy to tap the manifold. I recommend for the time it takes to take it off the car, do it off the car. You can do it on the car though.
Good luck with the setup. Boosting is a lot of fun, and a lot of work to maintain. But if you enjoy being under your hood you'll never look back :thumbsup

Here's a vote against the missing link. I don't like it. I'll take a properly constructed and designed voltage clamp over a check valve (for our stock MAP sensor situation) ANY DAY!
This is what my missing link did ...
Still just let a hair of positive pressure past to allow me to fuel cut Prevented my MAP from seeing all the vacuum generated at idle and cruise
Sure it could be cleaned but I don't want to be driving around and have a dirty MS cause all my fuel trims go nuts (I was running a rising rate FPR at the time). With the voltage clamp I know exactly what its going to do and under what condition. When voltage comes to 4.7v it's stops it there and never allows anything greater to be sent to the ECU. With the MS, the check valve is in play under all conditions ... vacuum, boost, whatever ... it's there and it's doing something.
That's just my $0.02.

Alright, well do you know what size die I should use on the wastegate?, might as well get it when I get the paste. Oh yea, anything else i will need for the wastegate mod? Thanks

these are pics of it. the bottom one is mine, the top is from someone else (i think, cant remeber) also, do a search on "wastegate mod", theres some more info on thisfloating around here. the die is what ever you decide to use, or its dependant on what the thread and pitch size is of the turnbuckle. i recommend a vaccum/pressure pump with a gauge to get yout wastegate set at so you know where its at before you run it. EDIT i guess they are both mine at differnt stages of "seeing what worked after clocking the compressor... but you get the idea...
