90256, EGT Probe placement?
Posted by flamineclipse, Oct-03-05 10:45 AM
Has anyone put their EGT probe on the bottom side of the mani? If so did you have any problems with it. I have only seen people put them on top of the 3rd runner, but I'd like to have it hidden on the bottom out of sight.

Oh, you don't like altezza's? Too bad, your gonna get a good look at mine.

Someone on here has it on the bottom of the #4 runner, but I forget who, lol.

shouldn't really matter where you put it as long as it is in the manifold and as long as the wires and the outter portion of the probe is not touching anything or seeing major heat.

I thought the 1st cylider ran the hottest. If so I'd put it there.

Maybe it was the 4th cylinder. I don't know :shrug

I have heard this as well. (about the 1st cylinder being the hottest) If this is the case, why do most people put it in the third runner? I have searched it and can't really find anything conclusive. Also what did you use to seal the threads on the bung?

Thanks Guys

Why because they dont listen or the info they listen to is wrong and misguided.

Your fuel rail..... cyl 1 is at the end of the rail in terms of fuel feed. The pressure is regulater prior to the rail so as fuel injector duty cycle increases the pressure will drop off towards the end of the rail. The end to the rail is cylinder 1. if any cyl is starved for any amount of fuel it will be cyl 1.

Some people argue cyl 4 is the leanest. that is because the people citing that either have a 4g63 or are looking at a 4g63 and thinking they have the same fuel system. for the 4g63 cylinder 1 is at the end of the rail; however, so is the regulator so its kind of a give and take. with the regulator at the end of the rail cylinder 4 will still have a tiny bit higher pressure due to pressure drop as the fuel flow gets closer to the regulator.

Now how do people get the two confused? The 4g63 is opposite our motors so their cylinder #1 is our cylinder #4.

Why thank you sir! That is very good infomation and makes sense. So I will put it on the 1st runner. Do you have an opinion about putting it on the top or bottom?

Top or bottom shouldnt matter. I chose the front for mine so it was easy to remove for pulling the motor ect. Now if you get the tre probe, it has a nice little connector you can unplug and is fast reacting, VERY fast!

That's where I have mine. But I know others on here have it there too.

I have mine in the cyl head where the egr was. I havent ran it off of idle yet to see how well it reads though.

best time so far 14.3 @ 101.1mph(no traction)

ahhh your a tricky one.

My probe is in the DP, but it was my understanding that the runner closest to the battery (4th) would B the hottest due to it being the last cylinder to be cooled.

A lil confusion me thinx ;)

The #4 cylinder runs the most hot. I didn't even know this was a debate, I thought it was PROVEN by probing each cylinder. The intake manifold's pressure drops as you move further toward the back (toward cylinder #1) meaning #4 is getting more air than the rest.

I thought the fuel pressure drop across the rail on 96-99's was negilible.

The 95 has a return line at the end of the fuel rail, there is no pressure drop at all.

Here is a pic of my probe in the bottom of the #4. I just replaced it with a fast K type.

You can see where it is in this pic:

I have tried #1 and #4 on my 97 and #1 is a tiny bit hotter, 50 degrees maybe. :shrug

I have discussed the issue with a local speed shop and they agreed the fuel pressure drop was the possible cause even though they recommend 4 EGT's on a dyno but then again i would look like a honda owner with 4 egt gauges hanging off my pillar.

HA! 4 EGT's, right next to the volt meter guage.

Anyway, mine is in the same place Wicked's. I've always felt I've had accurate readings.

Haha, maybe we can get away with two.

I think the moral of the story is, if you have your return line off your fuel rail, put it in #4, if it's not #1 or #4 should be good.

i thought about putting it into the collector of the mani for an "average" reading to see how that changes but its at least 4-5 inches from the valve

When my car was stock I tapped the collector for the EGT. I wasn't as concerned with a totally accurate reading, but it was definitely a good spot for one.

shoot if I had the money for a manifold It settle this once and for all. We have 8 egt gauges for the engine dyno at school.
