89298, car much harder to start after turbo install Posted by BumpinTalon, Sep-07-05 07:39 AM
Alright I just put in my turbo, got everything fixed, and have been driving it around.. but the car really doesn't like starting the first time I try it. It will crank for over a second before it starts and then it bogs, sputters, and then gets to idle. If I try and start it, stop, and then try again it will start right away or if I start it when the car is warm. Also, my car is idling as less vacuum. Cruising with a bit of throttle it will be at 17 Vacuum but with the car not in gear, just parked, it will be at 12 or 13, but the car idles just like it did before. Any ideas?

What all have you changed since it started easily?

turbo! so I've got a T3/T4 now instead of just the regular exhaust, open downpipe, I have a Vortech 12:1 FMU running as well as the stock '95 FPR (not disabled), changed the fuel pump to a Walbro 255LPH.. and then the new charge pipe and filter. Oil change to 5W30 100% synthetic too.

how come the stock FP regulator isn't disabled?

hmm my Vortech can't adjust the stock idle pressure... or so I think anyway, there is no adjustment screw anywhere on it. The Vortech shouldn't affect the fuel delivery at idle anyway, though.

vacume leak?

Does it start easier if you click the key on until the priming pulse finishes, and then off and on again (for the second priming pulse)?
if so, it's just the walbro. they all do that to some extent, though if it's as bad as you describe you may want to consider double checking your install or verifying your fuel pressure while starting / cranking

hmm okay, what kind of fp should I be looking for during starting? 45-50psi? could a vacuum leak cause this problem as well? I am sure I have one since I am idling at a few Hg less vacuum then I did before as well.

I tried what you said, didn't really help. Still does it. Starts fine on the second time, but I miss being able to turn the key and listen to my engine roar to life right after.

do we have to disable the stock fpr? I have a '95 also but have yet to disable it...

if you want to adjust FP to lower than stock numbers yes. otherwise you will always have 45-50psi.

ahh ic...could that be the reason why my car doesnt run so well with boost? Because its difficult for me to even hit 5 psi and Ive already checked for leaks and such and everything seems fine.

are you sure your wastegate is set up properly? your stock FPR should have nothing to do with how much you boost.

Now I'm having issues with raising fuel pressures with boost. I think I have got to take my SFMU apart and change the springs around. I have 35 psi at idle but it only goes up to 57 psi at 7psi. :(

Im pretty sure it is, i mean, is there a way that it can be installed improperly? The ring is inside and tightened well. I dont have a gasket but I heard that shouldnt cause that much of a leak.
