ok... about every week or so i have to tighten my turbo bolts.(turbo to manifold) i dont know what's causing it to literally unfasten itself but just to be safe, im probably going to use studs instead of what i got now.(stupid bolts) my question is, what really causes this? previous posts that i searched through said to brace the dp. well, my dp is braced, manifold is braced, and the turbo will be next. just wanna know what everyone else uses to get them bitches tight! threadlock is just not doing its job!

It is more a combination of heat causing expansion, and engine vibration that causes bolts to back out. Studs should be used in conjunction with lock washers. Blue Loctite optional.

If you want to do it right (what race cars use), you need a mechanical lock.
Get ss studs 8mm x 1.25 50-60mm in length, ss nuts for them, and then the trick is to use ss serated lock washers, and no other washers (as this will defeat the purpose of the serated washers). All can be had from mcmaster.com for a few bucks.
Torque studs using the double nut method, install turbo, torque nuts, re-torque nuts after 1 full heat cycle.

I'm having the same problem. Every week I'm tightening. I've used threadlock and that doesn't seems to work. I still have to brace my DP though so I will give that a try first. Let me know if the studs work.

If you really want to be serious about locking nuts or bolts in place, look at how aircraft mechanics do theirs. They use safety wires. However trying to find those kind of bolts may be a little challenging. I suggest look in your local yellow page a speak w/ bolt retailers, they should have answers to your questions as well.

Split-lock washers seem to work fine for me.

You don't buy them that way. You get a safty wire bolt jig and drill the heads yourself. This is a requirement on a select few bolts for Formula SAE teams, and we do it so that your brakes CAN'T fall off, etc... Extremely unneccessary for the exhaust manifold on a car. Just use serated washers of ss (ss so they don't corrode from the heat).
