89108, finally decided, 420a = turbo now
Posted by mckooter, Aug-30-05 04:51 PM
Ive been back and fourth on this issue for a long time, weither or not to turbo my 420a and I think now Im ready to get started.

It will be a long process for me, ill buy the parts for the next 6mos or so and install in the spring. This will be a daily driver and just a fun car. I was starting to go a little too much rice then quickly swept myself back.

So now for the questions you guys have answered again and again, but are hard to find:

Realistically untill I can get around to rebuilding the bottom end can I run 4-6psi in it safely? (83000mi)

Is it even semi smart to buy a manifold off ebay? I dont want to build a manifold and I have seen a hahn once or twice on there

Also im 90% sure this is incorrect but I saw that an srt4 manifold would fit, any truth to that?

Thanks for all your help, this will end up being my status thread for my decician to finally boost this little car

Well I just want to say you have a journey ahead of you. You def. have the right Idea in mind. Buy parts SLOWLY when you get a good deal on them and build up a kit...It's exactly what I have done.

My only adive to you is to SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH and READ READ READ. This site will help you properly turbo your car but it WILL take TIME, Money, and EFFORT!!!!

Good luck man!

okay ive been talking to the guy who is my "mechanic" all night

and he is convinced that he could do a 4g63 swap for wayy cheaper. now ive seen a ton of posts about how difficult this is, he seems to think that its cheaper and easier this way

Now what specific problems do I run into doing this

I realise I need the tranny as well, and we would be getting a junkyard motor with a timing belt that went and rebuilding the entire motor.

I also understand I need many other parts:

ECU
Wiring Harness?
Etc.

is there any specific cons to this besides time, because time isnt really a problem as this would be done by me and him and a few others,

So i guess im not positive anymore, I am doing something turbo related

Thanks
Chris

ya sure its not that hard the only real big Down side to it is; having one forward gear and 5 reverse gears; which could be pretty cool i guess.

unless your mechanic is a real whiz and wants to make you some kinda guarentee really dont recomend you ask that around here. Might just want to search, i know everyone that reads it is gonna cringe when they see 4g63 swap. your best/cheapest bet is building up the turbo kit slowly; and no the srt-4 manifold does not line up with ours. There is some guy in canada that sells manifolds on ebay that i've heard people have had good luck with. best thing i can recomend is search search search. Thats what i've done and i've learned soooooo much. Almost ready to start slapping on my turbo parts here soon.

I think this is the only one that hasn't been answered.. Yes, that's fine, but if non-intercooled, I would stay at 5psi or below until you have enough money to blow the motor up :).

mckooter, if I were you, since you're going to be boosting that low. I suggest to go grab yourself a catch can that way the motor bay looks clean when ring lands crack. I cracked three out of four man! I'd keep my eye on that can because oil is going to begin migrating. By then you'll know it's time to take the 420A apart.

And I can only give you the best advice any one can ever give you. Don't go cheap! Do it once and do it right! If you're going to rebuild, get some J.E. (get it coated) and eagle rods w/ ARP studs.

Going turbo will be the best decision ever. You'll be playing w/ the big boys now! Welcome to the club buddy!

a whole community that has more experience with 420A versus your mechanic...

who you going to listen to?

4g63swap...i wouldnt. i think there was one one or two members who actually did the swap and ran into problems. dont know if theyre still running or not. if i were you, i would just buy and hahn mani and turbo, get a dp made, and buy the rest of your pieces within these next few months.

http://forcedairresearch.tripod.com/ for a turbo mani. They can put any turbo flange and is only 180 shipped. I have no experience with these guys but I have heard good things about their manifolds and was my main choice for a mani before i decided to get a full kit. They were also helpful in answering my questions.

okay im with you, i just cannot seem to find a reason why its hard. New motor new tranny, get all the mounting hardware and its in. Im not saying that it isnt hard im just trying to find out how its hard, so I can personally weigh out my options,

For one, because the mounting points are different, the wiring is completely different, the ECUs are completely different, it may as well be a completely different car. You have no idea what you're talking about getting yourself into. Have either of you even SEEN a 4g63 engine bay?

word

we had a guy on this forum try it, I can't even remember who he was, but he attempted the 4G63 swap and after about $7k flushed down the drain all he had to show for it was a 4G63 engine and a cut up 2GNT shell, and he never really got it running or driveable. A completely outrageous project. It has been done, sure, but people have turned some very impressive numbers on our car with our factory motor. Save all that money you were going to spend on the 4G63 swap and spend it on a built bottom end for your 420A instead.

or you could take that 7k and get a gst/gsx sell your 420a and use that money to build up the already turbo'd car....or you can just send me a check for half that and pretend you flushed it down the toilet

Very true. Either sell or turbo it. No swapping.

okay thats what i wanted, an idea of what the problems are,

so the mounting points, wiring, are my problems,

i am with you guys on this, i think its not a good idea, but before I truly believe that its not good its nice to know why

so its not smart to swap, and too difficult, as for not getting it running correctly thats the persons own fault, I mean i can cram a geo metro motor in my car and get it to run correctly.

So back to the adding turbo, i was just weighing my options

Somehow you have failed to understand that this is impossible...an hour of searching on here you would have figured out this is damn near impossible.

I cant believe people even wasted there time to tell this kid whats up with the swap...

Keep on beating that dead horse!!!!!

What the hell are you talking about? He said he knows it's too difficult and is just going to turbo his car.

My weed eater has a bigger motor than a Geo Metro, there would be no "craming" going on heh.
