88697, need desperate help in fuel management...built bottom, stock fuel! Posted by juggalomm, Aug-14-05 12:47 PM
im getting an eclipse with a 420a that's already turbo'd. i've always wanted a dsm...preferably a 92 talon, but i got a straight up trade offer for my truck for this car. anyways, here's what the guy has done: ---- 2.0 DOHC 5spd Turbonetics T3/T4 turbo conversion JE forged pistons bore .20 Eagle rods Crane cams steel shaved crank aluminum underdrive pulleys custom made intercooler Star header MSD coil and wires HKS BOV Gorilla waste gate new Saches clutch HKS turbo timer Autometer Boost and air/fuel guages 3" downpipe 3" exhaust removed cat ---- i've done many searches and researched dsmtuners and this site for a while now. im going to buy a walbro 255hp fuel pump...i THINK i should buy 550cc injectors but im not sure. i want to buy a 12:1 fmu. would those be sufficient? im a newbie when it comes to this but i have a basic understanding. i want to run around 12lbs of boost for daily, and be able to turn it up safely. but in order to do that, i need to know about the fuel. any suggestions or would the items i listed be sufficient? thanks a lot..

are you 100% certain the car has all that stuff, or is that just what you're told. it seems pretty odd that there would be that much work done for it to still only have a stock fuel system.
i also encourage you to use the search function, not because im lazy and dont want to answer your questions, but becasue "fuel systems" have been discussed more than jenna jameson has been pounded! you really will learn a lot moe from the search...

i've searched and learned a lot. but i just can't find anything about a built bottom end and using an fmu. i see people using the $400 fuel management stuff, but not the 12:1 fmu. and i'm pretty sure it has that stuff. here's the link, theres an engine bay picture... http://www.mautofied.com/listing-100017408.html but yeah...should i buy what i listed in the first post or something else? i dont really wanna spend 39084737 on a safc...so if there's somethin cheaper than that, ill go for it.

whoa. the guy even told me i need to buy a new fuel pump and injectors because he has the stock stuff. he said i'd need fuel management...and lets see how smart he is. he told me that right now he runs 8lbs of boost, but also that he has safely put it up to 14lbs for about a day and had no problems. can that be possible on stock injectors? i thought at 8lbs, they were almost maxed out and working harder...the sad thing is im getting this car tuesday and im probably gonna be screwed. i shoulda researched more haha.

Sounds like if he has a t3/t4 you probably already have the star kit which comes with an FMU
I find it impossible to believe that he is boosting 8psi with ZERO fuel management.
no way in hell

im not buying it. im trading my truck for it. it's a straight up trade...we just gotta pay to transfer titles. my truck is bagged and shaved and slow as balls. i need speed. and im trying to learn. i shoulda stuck with the idea of gettin a 92 talon...i know more about the 4g63 than the 420a. thank god this sites here though. i still didn't get my question answered...should i get like 450 or 550 injectors since we now know the car has a fmu?

find out what injectors it has on it first, i too find it hard to believe he's boosting 8psi and actually went up to 14psi on stock injectors with no problems

i get the car tomorrow...ill grab my dsm homie and have him check the injectors. if he doesn't know, ill take some pictures of it and show you guys. but he told me straight up that its running on stock injectors and the stock pump. but if he has an fmu that he didn't know about then he may be mistaken. he's the third owner of the car, so who the hell knows. when i get it, ill grab some more pictures for you guys. i was gonna order the walbro 255hp fuel pump, but this guy might already have one. i guess we'll have to wait and see. thanks for all the help, i was expecting to get flamed for being a newbie.

im just waitin' for ya cherry, im just waitn'...! }(
actually, you do need to find out EXACT specifics on what he has for fuel, cause if he's been runnin 8 psi daily on a bone stock fuel system (other than FMU, if its hooked up (im the town cynic)) and occasionaly to 14, then you can expect a blown motor soon, if not already. i highly recommend you do a comp check before you trade, cause if you have the need for speed, and you trade your truck for a tits up motor...enjoy the speed of the bus!

well we gotta drive three hours to meet this guy...and drive that eclipse three hours back. he claims the car can run safely at 8lbs of boost and that's what he's driven it at for the past year that he's had the car. obviously he doesn't know too much about the car because he didn't even know he had a fmu. i'm supposed to call him tonight for final plans before we meet, what should i ask him specifically? should i ask him if the "blue object on the firewall" (since he doesn't know he has a fmu) is hooked up? let me know..

this seems shady. the guy calls me last night and says "i was driving it saturday, and heard a clicking noise...then my clutch wasn't working like it was supposed to. then it just died. i just put a new clutch in two months ago. so we're gonna have to wait a week till i can put a new clutch in." blaaah. atleast the clicking wasn't his 8psi boosted engine with stock injectors blowing up. when/IF i get it, ill let everyone know.

That is a bad omen...you should bail now. If he doesn't know what he has and you don't know what you are buying...you are asking for trouble. He probably has a basic star fuel system. That is a Walbro 255 lph hi-press pump, 12:1 FMU, and stock injectors. The stage II kits with intercoolers ran 8 psi of boost. 14 psi would be super dangerous on that fuel system. You need bigger injectors and a new S-FMU at a minimum. You won't be able to throw big injectors at it an expect it to run well. You will have to choose an injector size wisely and set up the S-FMU with the right base pressure, disks, and springs. The clutch is likely a standard replacement clutch from Sachs (or some E-bay pseudo-upgrade).

well...god works in mysterious ways. someones going to buy my truck for 9 grand, and i just suddenly found a car 45 minutes away. it's an rs with a turbo conversion...and it's much much better. i emailed the guy to see if he still has it, no response yet...but it's got this stuff this time haha: --Wisco 8.6 .02 over Eagle Rods Crane 0014 cams Crane Valve spring set 1mm oversized SS valves Eaton PT Cruiser lifter/lasher adjusters SBI rocker arm set ARP Head stud kit Port and Polished Head 55mm bored throttle body Custom 8 injector Standalone primary 190cc secondary 450cc Aeromotive fuel pressure reg. does that sound a little more reliable? he had it dyno'd in MY town and had 301whp at 17psi...

You are getting warmer. You might inquire as to what extra injector controller he is using. It is odd that he is using 190 cc/min primaries with a S-AFC. 235 cc/min is stock, so it is odd to choose a smaller primary. One would have to compensate with higher base fuel pressure. And using the S-AFC with small primary injectors, or even a S-AFC with an 8 injector setup is weird. Buying these mystery turbo conversion cars will always be a gamble. Its alot safer to buy a stock car and build it yourself. Then you know what you are getting.

heres what he said about the injectors...corbin, is this legit? >>....the injector set up was made for nothing more than 21psi so the injector size of the secondary is a little smaller but when you put the stock injectors and secondary injectors together i get the fuel of 4 700cc injectors...and i can tune the primary 4 injectors with the SAFC...so it all works out...i will show and explain everything to you about the system and car...you will need a laptop to tune the car...but that was also another thing i wanted to do becuase i havnt had a chance to get it tuned with my electronic boost controller that smooths the boost curve and allows me to run higher boost instead of peaking at 18lbs then creeping down to 16psi...<< this guy sounds like he knows his stuff...haha better than the last guy. tell me if that sounds legit then. thanks!!
