88596, turbo install. eclipse virgin. help please.
Posted by charlie29152, Aug-10-05 07:43 PM
i have the star kit, using a t3 turbo, a large fmic, and some other things. first off, i just blew a completely built motor, so i am installing a stock one for a while. how much boost can i get by on? i will either be using a tial or turbonetics wastegate if that info is needed. also, i have an aeromotive 1:1 boost dependent fpr. how does one go about installing one of these on an eclipse? i have heard that the fuel system is a returnless type. also, i have a nx ntercooler kit. are these safe to use with the kit and a stock motor? i am a honda guy, first car away from them. i have an extensive knowledge of cars, just none on mitsu's. so... all help would be useful. oh, and it's a 95 eclipse rs. i have a greddy emanage with the boost sensor and injector/timing harnesses that i am thinking of installing. is this any good? and will it do any good without someone sitting there tuning it? if it takes tuning, i can get it done, but am hoping that it will control the system and read the boost so it can change up the maps. anyway, all help is much appreciated. thanks in advance.

okay here's the deal. i had the motor completely built by a guy who had a machine shop. he put everything together right, but the main bearings he got for the motor were labeled wrong from the factory... too large. so upon cranking the motor, instant spun bearings, and 12 miles down the road, a brand new eagle h-beam came out the front of the motor. i was being very easy with the motor, and had gotten 2 lbs. of boost at most. on to the search thing. tried that, but it is kinda hard to familiarize with. i am a www.hondahookup.com veteran, so still trying to get acquainted with the layout of the site. i plan on starting to acquire the new parts i need to rebuild the motor very soon. and some time next year, will do a complete build with a friend of mine who has experience and is ase certified. in the meantime, i have all this stuff, and would like to hook it up. i could easily get rid of the aeromotive fpr, just kinda want to know why. why is it different from a fmu? but anyway, i could hold off on the emanage install for now, just trying to get an idea of what boost to run, and what kind of numbers to expect as far as hp. please don't give me the search line though, i will familiarize in time, but until then... need to get info quick. thanks for additional help all... i need it.

not too long ago, there was a couple here that dynoed at 199.9WHP on just 5psi, but i'd say that was tuned perfectly. You could safely run 6-7psi, or even 9-10psi, but just be careful if you go this route; and make sure you spend some time tuning things correctly so you don't blow the motor.

how good does the tune need to be? i mean on a stock ecu and the like? also, has anyone dealt with raceengineering.com? i just realized that i have in all likelihood 3 good wiseco pistons for low compression, and 3 good eagle h-beams. just need to figure out if raceengineering will sell single piston and single rod. and i still have a head that needs new valves, but has titanium valve springs and retainers. so was thinking bout getting a new valve job/port and polish on the head and putting in stainless steel valves. then building up the bottom end. and what is a good engine management system to go with once i get the motor built? but, back to the main thing, need help with the tasks at hand first. thanks again y'all.

I'll try help you the best I can with my post other than saying "search".

Anyway, stock is about 7-10 psi, but again it depends. I've read some who blow it in a month, in some cases a week if they don't know what the hell they are doing, and some can go for years. Again, it depends on the motor and how well its been taken care of.

As far as the aeromotive fpr, if you wanna go with that option, it works, but you have to use some form of piggy back computer which the emanage is. However, I've read that the emanage can be difficult so can't help you there. (read further in my post).

95s have the return line on there fuel so don't have to bother with that. 96 and above are the returnless.

I suggest however that since you are new to the 2gnt turbo scene, I recommend keeping your setup as simple as possible with a vortech sfmu that's boost depended and with a stock ecu. The emanage (and piggy backs in general) are really for the big boys and if you don't know what you are doing, you will say goodbye to your other new motor. I suggest go with the simplest way till you know your way arround. As far as the n-tercooler spray thingy, again simplicity right now. You're not exactly pushing the turbo system to its limits and need additional cooling at low boost levels.

if you have a star kit, then just install it. and go from there. you should try to keep it as simple as possible.

oh and btw. im the guy that dynoed 199.96 @5psi! and i just a run basic setup.

you have a much larger turbo then most people use on our car, though. 200whp @ 5psi is quite a lot. the Star T3/T4 probably would not make quite that much power at 5 psi.

Actually, i am not running the t3/t4 anymore. i am now running a smaller t3 for the moment. so i should hopefully be able to achieve those boost levels, but i will be running 7 or 8 psi. other than that, still loving the help guys.

I agree with the above members, i learned everything about the 420A from 2gnt members so try and keep your car simple to start off. I blew my motor at 10psi after a few months afetr installed. What happened to your Honda?

just sold it to put a new motor into the eclipse. and then, in a year or so will be doing a complete build of the motor. but until then, would like to run the turbo, as it is just sitting around anyway.

alrighty then... so back to the topic at hand if you please. what else should i know going into this? do i need a vortech 12:1 fmu or what? need to know these things so that i may order. also is the egr block off a good idea? i have heard it was but want to double check. even though i am new to the 420a platform, i have a lot of experience with motor work in general. oh and by the way, that r34 bumper looks sweet on that eclipse. thanks a bunch guys, and let's keep this thing going so that i can get more info.
