Hey all, Road Race Engineering can custom make a heat-shield for your HRC turbos, but only if you bring the car to them, and leave it for 2 days. Dan (at the 2gnt meet) had the heat shield and it looked awesome. Here is a pic:



Below is what Mike said about the heat shields and also about the fuel pump:

We also did some other heat wrapping and shielding beyond what Hahn supplies in their kit, it was like $200 total for all the heat shielding.

I had a long talk with Bill Hahn at the SEMA show about fuel pump noise on their kit. From what he said Dan's car is "normal" :-P I axed him about the Walbro 255 high pressure intank pump and he thought it wasn't enough. There
are a lot of other turbo kits using that pump though. I dunno. For as crazy loud as that external pump is I think I might be tempted to try it regardless.

I like that heat shield a lot, but I cant justify over 100 bux for one right now, and I cant take it to them, so I guess I'm SOL, huh? Why cant they make more heat shields? A HRC is a HRC manifold isnt it? Why do they need the car? Why dont we get a group buy thing going on here cause I'm sure others would like those heat shields. One person can take their car to RRE and have a bunch of shields fabricated and then we'll all get em and at a better price hopefully since they wont have to be installed, just shipped out.

Why not save $90 and make your own heat sheilds? Some aluminum flashing and a little ingenuity are all thats needed. You can use fireproof insulating board to further improve it.

No groupbuy at this time because RRE does not have enough time to mass produce it. I guess it's easier to just custom make it each time so it will fit for sure on the car. Manufacturing in bulk requires a lot of precision. I personally wouldn't know how to make my own heat shield, but your's looks cool too Corbin. I was just amazed to see how clean and nice the heat shield looked on Dan's car at the 2gnt meet.

I can't remember but did it just screw on or was it welded somewhere? I hope its not as bad as that stock heat shield( what a bitch that was)

Hey Corbin.....What did you use to make that sheild that goes around the air filter? I am going to make one of those and I am going to try out making a heat sheild

man that's a nice pic! would RRE make heat shielding for other turbo kits? ie. star, ner, etc? also those black ic piping, is that stock with hrc kit? that's sweet!

I do like that alot and I think the pic has inspired me to take my ass to Home Depot and make the same thing including a tool to cut the metal for a little less than $170 (hopefully alot less. come to think of it my 5sp dremel has yet to fail in completing a task). Bolting it down will be easy ( I got a drill and tap), shaping the SS I dont know how easy that will be.

Hey guys, glad you like the heat shielding... I actually got it to keep my radiator and hood from melting (it gets HOT) but was happily surprised how much cleaner the install looks now. It even hides all the oil im spraying everywhere ;)

The heat shield bolts on. The round part only has one bolt on the left side. It wobbles up and down but it's wedged against the radiator enough that it doesn't go far. The manifold part has 2 bolts. There's 2 nuts welded to the exhaust manifold to screw into. I'll take pics with the shield off for reference. I can also give anyone dimensions if they want em. It's pretty simple to fabricate if you can weld and cut s.steel.

how much did RRE charge you for the installation of your HRC kit? i remember seeing it on racks while I was down there?

They charged $800. Mike told me the next NT kit install "would be either a little less, or a lot more". It took them a little over 2 weeks to do. He did say the kit was more complete and simpler than some of the custom turbo kits they get in there.

If you own jackstands and a socket set, I'd recommend you do it yourself. It's bolt on, except for some medium sized parts you can take to RRE to get cut.

I'd be down for helping ppl install the kit on their own. I don't know much, but I like playing around under the car, and kinda know where things are supposed to go.

The air filter one is 1/16" polypropylene. Its tough and can handle the heat. I used pop-rivets to assemble it. I borrowed the polypropylene from the lab at school but they got it from http://www.mcmastercarr.com

800 dollars and 2 weeks?!?!?!!?

Mine took 10 hours and cost 100 dollars. (10 dollars an hour for electricity).

Look around and find a better deal. Do it yourself. I'm sure whatever you might somehow screw up would cost less than 800 dollars anyway.

Yah that was kinda the conclusion I came to, too. I wanted RRE to do it because I didn't want to have to worry about problems with the install. This was kinda naive on my part.

The 2 weeks part was half Hahn's fault for not sending the correct fuel system and complete lack of any manuals. (They faxed RRE scratchy blurry ones eventually.) I did get the feeling RRE wasn't the best place to take a 420a though.

RRE might be busy and take a bit longer, but I'm glad I took my car there for the head work and valve replacement. They know what they are doing, so I trust them more than other shops. 800 for a turbo install is pretty cheap if you think about it. That's including the $200 heat shield right? So that's 600 for probably 15 hours or more of labor since it was the first they ever did it. That's only 40 bucks an hour or less for labor which is cheap compared to other places that charge 65 now. I just like the reassurance of knowing a competent shop did the work, so I don't have to worry so much about little things.

Another question Corbin....

I looked on the site and the thinnest piece they have is 3/16". I think that is kinda thick. I guess I can make it out of aluminum. What did you use to seal it up against the hood?

They sell the polypropylene sheets in thicknesses down to 1/16", you just have to search some. Its on page 3157 of the catalog if that helps. You can also get many different types of aluminum and stainless items too. Search around some and you'll see that they have ALOT to offer. Yeah, I used split silicon hose to seal against the hood.
