now i'm trying to figure out how these fittings are supposed to be put on the fuel line, i feel like an idiot for not figuring it out, but i'm not sure if you have to cut off the braiding or if there is some way to get the fittings on over the braiding b/c i can't seem to get them on and i wanna get this done this weekend TIA

Easiest way is to wrap it in tape before you make the cut in the line, then cut it with a hacksaw or very, very sharp metal shears. Try to keep the braining together, then slide the sleeve over it. Once the sleeve is on and over the braiding, take the screw-on nippled fitting and cram it down in there until you can catch threads to suck it the rest of the way down. that's the real hard part.. cutting the line and getting the sleeve on is relatively easy.

I also think it helps to clamp the hose in a vise while trying to thread the fitting down onto it. That way you can turn the wrench with one hand and press down on the fitting with the other.

First off you in for some fun, but it isn't that bad once you have done it a couple of times.

First off you will need something to cut the hose with. I use an abrasive cut off wheel which works very well. After you decide where you need to cut the hose get some tape like masking tape or even electrical tape and rap a few raps of tape around the area to be cut. Then take the cutoff tool and cut though the hose and tape. This keeps the ends of the stainless steel wires from fraying, which will make it almost impossible to get in the fitting.

Next, unscrew the piece of the fitting that the hose goes in (the nut piece) and put it in a vise to hold it. Then carefully remove the tape from the end of the hose a press the hose all the way into that piece. You will then need to put some oil on the barbed piece off the fitting and inside off the hose where the fitting goes into and then screw them together. You may have to unscrew it and screw back together a couple of times to get the hose to seat down all the way.

Also keep in mind that the sleeves are reverse threaded... which means when you "screw" them onto the hose, you turn counter-clockwise.

I usually wrap the hose with electrical tape *very*very* tightly around the area of the hose to be cut, and then go around it again with electrical in the opposite direction. Then I cut it with a chop saw and remove the outside layer of electrical tape. Leave the first tight layer on. Then install the sleeve (reverse thread). Put it in a vice, using aluminum jaw protectors, and install the fitting using a little bit of oil.

Make sure you clean the inside of the hose before using it. A chopsaw, in particular, will leave a mess of rubber powder inside the hose. Q-tips, gasoline, and an air compressor work well.

Hahaha, and I thought I was the only one who uses electrical tape then a chopsaw. I will try the wrapping twice in opposite directions next time I'm assembling a hose though. I perfer using etape and then a band saw, but I don't have one in my garage yet, and my hacksaw blades are never good enough.

Yeah the real secrets are to so tightly wrap it (if it frays you didn't wrap it tight enough), and to use some SAE 30 oil, or assembly lube on the inside of the hose and on the barb when you're pushing it together. Also, be sure to push only by the hose and not the sleeve (common sense I believe).

The first several times you do this you will swear a doctor just unloaded on your hand with an automatic finger pricker.
