87029, Another turbo'd 420a (almost) but i have a question about the a/f gauge

Well my father and i installed almost my entire kit today after running into one problem after another and tomorrow i will be finishing up the last few things. My question is I got an air/fuel gauge from nordstrok that reads 0-1 v, but i don't know what a good range is that i should be lookin to see, i thought i saw it on here once before but after searching for about an hour i haven't found anything. Any help would be appreciated. Oh yea, one more thing do you think a fp gauge is necessary if i have a pyrometer and a/f gauge b/c idk if i wanna bother hooking it up or if i should just return it and get my 20 bucks back. Sorry for the long post thanks guys

You should tune rich then down to .93 volts max. If you have a rising rate fpr then the fuel press. gauge is a must.

that is a rising rate fpr... but i don't have a fp gauge, I just hooked one up to set the idle fuel pressure but hey i am rebuilding now so what do i know... :+

20 bucks and the hassle to install it is WELL worth the peace of mind. Knowing your fuel pressure is step number one in tuning and troubleshooting problems in the near future.

I actually have the gauge i just wasn't exactly sure how to install it i think i'll have to take a look at it with my dad i guess.

Final question....please pardon my ignorance now that i know about where the a/f ratio should be, what's what, higher/lower number = rich or lean i'm not sure but i'm seeing about .85-.86 at WOT

i only took it up to like 5 grand but damn i can feel theres a big difference

Well take it your narrowband o2 sensor isn't crapping out on you, You are running very very lean. Anything under .90v is dangerously lean when boosted. Anything over .98v is super rich. .93-.94 is ideal.

ya you deffinately running WAY too lean. get rid of that standard FMU and get something adjustable.

You really don't need the Vortech SFMU, nice-to-have for future upgrades though. The regular FMU works fine with stock injectors assumming it came with the standard 10:1 disk. Take a drive in it with a friend and report back the #s for your EGTs, A/F, boost and FP @ idle and WOT. That'll tell us alot about what's going on. You should also consider changing your fuel filter, my EGTs dropped alot after I did it; it was really dirty and couldn't believe I didn't change it sooner.

Ya know its possible that it is every once in a while i get a code for it that stays on for a few days and then goes off again, also i think there might be a kink in the fuel line from the stock fpr to the fmu so i've gotta fix that and see if it changes at all

is their a distinct smell when you are running lean b/c since the turbo has been on i've smelled something a little off almost like burning rubber, but not quite, i'm gonna fix the fuel hose tomorrow during lunch hopefully but idk if that will solve my problem i sure hope so if not i guess the next thing is to check the vac line connected to it

i know its been discussed before, but rubber fuel hose on fuel pump goes to the side of the fmu then the bottom line goes to where the rubber hose goes on the fuel pump correct?

TIA everyone b/c this site has done wonders in saving my ass

no hose connects to your actual intank fuel pump. do you mean your stock regulator?

i put the fmu between the line that goes from the stock fpr to the top of the entire fuel pump assembly....the rubber one shown here, hope i didn't fuck it up

That's correct. If you messed that up your engine would have blown to kingdom come.

you should be between .9 and .94 at wot whether your boosting or not, correct? i think my boost gauge my be f'd up too, its just giving me a negative number, maybe if i read the directions...

are you talking about when its idling? its going to be negative untill you get on it some with load on the motor.

no i'm talking about when i get on it a little, i really haven't taken it over 4 grand, but i would think the gauge would be giving me a positive number if the bov is being opened, unless if i have too many things teed off the same line

so far i'm thinking the problem could be
need a new fuel filter
vaccuum leak
O2 sensors are bad
or fmu doesnt work

i'm not noticing any knocking or other strange sounds from the engine, but whats got me is the odd smell, but that could also be from the paint i used to coat the downpipe or the gasket stuff i used for the downpipe and wastegate does anyone equate a strange smell with running lean?

i may just be being paranoid since i don't want to blow my motor

so after all these issues i was wonderin why my boost gauge would only show negative pressure, so i popped it off the tee and blew into it to see if it would show positive pressure, well i noticed that the hole in the universal vacuum tee was very small and realized i didn't cut enough of it off so i cut all ends on both tees and tada .9-.94 volts at WOT consistently, however only about 3 psi so i'm gonna have to do somethin about that
