86686, Mccord Exhaust Cutout/ GST catback Installed.... Posted by Semperboost, Jun-07-05 03:31 PM
Man it is sick! First a little background- I had a Custom 2.5" catback to a APEXi Dunk with a straight pipe and decided to go with the stealth route to keep the po pos at bay. I wanted the cabin as quiet as possible for long road trips. So I bought a used GST catback for $40 and bolted it up. First off, at idle it does not sound any quieter and I think even when I'm driving it the sound is about the same, quieter yes but not what I was expecting. Most of the sound is comming from the engine itself. It does not spool up as fast as it did before, I can feel the transistion, but it there wasn't that major pull once you get to 3000-3500. Also my EGTs jumped about 50 degrees Celsius which is a pretty big jump. I couldn't boost for long cuz I kept getting up to like 850-900 (1600+) temps. So I changed out my fuel filter while I was putting in the aluminum hardline for my SFMU and it dropped the EGTs alot, it was lower than when I had my previous exhaust. So that was a relief. After a month of driving with the stoc exhaust I wanted to put in the Mccord cutout. I've had it for awhile I just needed someone to weld it all up. I got the actual 2.5" cutout from summit and got some heat wrap and paint as well. I had the guy at the AutoHobby shop weld the cutout to the end of the downpipe (Star kit) I had to position the cutout sort of pointed up at my cat heatshield so that clearance wouldn't be an issue, just incase I bottomed out. It was right near the front swaybar. And I just got a set of RMDSM and thought "Man it's gonna be a pain gettin it out, gotta take of the DP" Anyways, I wanted to put a turn down on it so thatthe exhaust gases would go straight down but the bolts that are already welded on the cutout were too short. Wired it up to where the powermirrow switch would be and tested it out. Started it up and held down the switch to open it. Within 5 seconds my seat began to shake, the exhaust was real loud sounding like a MAC truck or something. At first my ears could not take the noise, especially with the windows up, but I got used to it. You can barely hear yourself with it open. At idle it's this mean-ass grumble, like "Don't F*ck with me, I'm in a bad mood" and it has this hi-pitched 'whurring' sound like the turbo is spooling. And you can hear it better when you give it a little gas. I love just going 5-10mph and hearing that sound. It's just like a damn 18 wheeler that sound or if anyone that know the USMC 7 tons. When you get on the gas it get Loud. It spools up faster, but it's like you don't even feel the transition.. It's not like hit the gas and you get launched, it's more like no waiting for the 'pull' cause it's already spooled and getting going - hard to explain. Also compared to both exhaust systems (OEM GST and 2.5") it PULLS ALL THE WAY TO REDLINE. It does not want to stop. I couldn't feel any significant drop off like before just steady power all the way through. I made a ran just today in about 85-90 degree weather and my EGTs were pegged around 800-820 C (1470-1500). I forgot to check my FP (too much shit too look at) but I'm sure I can get more power out of it using the bleed valve) Smells like I'm running real rich even with the 2.72 disk. Overall I'm happy with it. I sometimes open it up in the parking lot to give the ricers a scare. I kinda do miss the ability to just boost it hard and feel it pull all the time, anytime. Instead I gotta hit the switch and it's off to the races. It is a night and day difference in sound once you close it. It just purrs and you're cruisin'. Now for the pics right...if someone would kindly host my pics... Alvin
