86434, Egt at cruise 10" vac
Posted by rucr8z2, May-30-05 04:01 PM
My question is that my egt is about 1300 deg. cruising at 60 mph at 10"vac and the outside temp is 80 deg. My sensor is in the upper part of #4 runner---Isn't this high for cruising without boost?(or just my placement)

Doesn't go lean under boost

Under 6 psi boost for 15 seconds its 1550

I searched but all I could decipher from other posts is everyones different?Duh, but isn't there some sort of basic baseline...

took me less than 3 minutes to search

I said I alreday searched and did find your post but When I get near 75-80 It's 1500 with no boost

And by the way this is a forum not a searchum

oh snap, dont talk down to terry...
he is one of the wisest 2gnt'ers on here.

not to whore in tho, my freakign egt needle stays stuck at 8, i dont know why, do you know why maybe?
im wired to a good ground and to my cig lighter 12v.

Sorry, didn't mean to be like that, but seems like everyone says search and I did, but to talk to people about my problem,my setup and my specific problem is nice too! Like I mentioned at first everyones different and to try and figure out why my specific EGT is kinda on the high side.

I going to change my fuel filter tommorrow, maybe it's a little on the lean side when not boosting.

Sorry Star Turbo Talon for the @#$%$$.You post was very informative!

If you want advise on how to lower your EGT you should state it! Your question was, isnt my egt high for cruising? and if you read the thread i posted you would be able to draw a conclusion like any rational person that no! its not abnormally high as you can read other members have higher! Now why we need to waste this space on the 2gnt server by restating what is already in previous threads is beyond me.

If you want to lower your EGT while cruisign then do a search on the internet and learn what the EGR system does and what it is designed to accomplish, then re-install it!

Thanks Mike...car looks nice man

An egr system reburns exhaust gasses in an effort to lower hydrocarbons from your exhaust system for the goverment to lower emissions and the by product of this effort is a richer mixture when in effect - thus a cooler exhaust-(yeah a whole 50 degrees and a clogged intake system)
I didn't bring my #2 pencil ,will a pen work?

eh nope your wrong.......this is a very common misconception

The EGR recirculates Unburnt exhaust gasses that do not burn. These hot gasses result in less burning in the combustion chamber resulting in cooler combustion process resulting in the SAME exhaust mixture (since the ECU will run lean when the EGR opens to increase fuel economy) just cooler with the same performance level achieved. You are not gaining any performance by removing the EGR assy. With the EGR removed the ECU thinks it is opening the EGR, gasses are flowing and it leans out the fuel map while cruising; this increases your EGT while cruising.

You can run pig rich and still reach very hott combustion chambers and do a lot of damage if you are too rich. my point, richening the mixture will not bring the EGT's down.

Your intake will not become clogged at all period. It will become dirty but if you do your tuneups and run a can of Mopar combustion chamber cleaner once a year your intake will remain fairly clean.

A pen is only good if you are 100% positive you are correct.......in this case you need more paper now!

Terry

There are some real good threads on EGR systems...take a look at some point there is a real good link in one of them and explains this in greater detail.

Thats a good point and some what whitty of a response but I've got a new notebook full of paper.
I work on intake systems on a weekly basis and deal with EGR codes on what seems like a daily basis so I know what they do and don't do and the truth is that on a daily driver they help the engine run more efficently but on a car that you want to draw out the most power on their only a hindrance because they are unpredictable at best.
Not only do they clog themselves up(and stay open at idle) but like you said the coat the entire system including the back of your valves.

I won't disagree with either of you. Sure, a well designed and well implemented EGR system would be beneficial, but the EGR system on the 420a is not well designed, and certainly not well implemented. I removed my EGR system after it stuck open at idle, FYI, so I decided that I was not a fan of it's negative effects.

I would recommend building a Megasquirt and a wideband, and spending a few hours on a dyno.

cruising at 80, my egts stay between 1350 and 1400 consistently.

Thanks guys for everyones input and I mean everyones.
I rode around today after I changed my fuel filter and it still seems high but if everyone elses is as high or higher I guess I can't complain.
It did seem to drop a little this afternoon to about 1300 at 60mph (no boost) and my engine temp is right on.
I do agree that I need to run a better fuel system .
I'll search for some more info on the Megasquirt system!
