8634, Stage 2 turbo Questions!!! Boost and RPM's...
Posted by XtremeRS, Sep-21-01 10:00 AM
I just had a question on what rpm's does the aftermarket turbo's usually kick in? I remember a post not long ago saying that 4000 rpm's it was kickin in. If i remember, a stock turbo will get going @ 2000 rpm. It seems like a lot of wasted rpm range for a turbo to kick in at 4000. If anyone who has a stage 2 setup, let me know what u think, and at what rpm's does your system start to boost. Thanks!

I'm not turbo....but the reason that aftermarket turbo's don't kick in till later (by kick in i'm assuming you mean hit full boost) is because they are bigger then stock gst and gsx turbos. Which also means they can push more power.

Hmm I've never driven a GST before, but ru sure full boost is at 2000 RPM? My full boost is generally around 4000 and it starts to spool at like 2k sometimes. When get the exhuast we'll see what this BB turbo can do.

Yeah guys. In fact a T-25 will start to "kick in" at about ~2000rpm's. It's insane. That's why I don't think people should be so quick to diss the T-25's. Sure, there not worth much at the track....but on the street they're hella fun!

As far as my S-16g. It doesn't spool that fast either with the kick in the pants occuring closer to 3000+ to 3500 rpm's depending on gear. Not bad, but not as immediate either.

My turbo doesn't "kick in" until about 3500rpm but depends on what you call "kicks in". I achive positive pressure at 2300rpms but it aint worth sh*t, I dont think it overcomes the backpressure of the turbine to make any usable power there. 3000rpms it feels like its working. 3500rpm I hit around 6psi. Takes near 4000rpms to hit 10psi but by then it has kicked in already. The 16G probably kicks in significantly sooner. I really cant complain other than trying to launch the damn thing but I guess everbody has that problem regardless.

My T-25 was getting full boost (16psi) by like 2800-3000rpms. It's fun sometimes..but man it's a pain in the ass too...sometimes you don't want boost to slightly increase speed and boom touch of the gas and you got 10psi already. In short Bigger turbo's take longer to spin..thus lag is increased....My turbo doesn't really "kick in" until about 4k (18psi) But I still have stock manifold and o2 housing with a 2.5" DP..which will be upgarded to an 02 eliminator DP soon! :-)

There is a general consensus that instant boost is bad for a fwd and that progressive boost larger turbos provide gives you a better chance of gaining traction which is a major issue on a turbo fwd car. Theoretically, you could use a 'smart' boost controller like the ApexI AVC-R to optimize your boost patter for traction purposes, but I suspect it is easier said than done.

The AVC-R worked well with the T-25 down low, but up top it didn't matter, T-25 just couldn't hold boost anyhow.. Now with the new turbo I really don't have to limit boost because by the time I get full boost tire spin isn't as much of as an issue.

let me get this, say you have a stage one-you set the highest psi at 5 right, will it ever go over that, So I'm driving in 2nd gear and at around 4000rpms I hit 5 psi and keep going on until everything snaps or does it regulate it to stay at 5 psi

I am guessing you mean with a boost controller on this one. Which you wouldnt need with a stage 1 anyways cuz it should hit 5-7 regardless. But it SHOULD prevent the boost from going over 5 if you have the controller set at maximum 5psi

Then what it just stays steady? How about with a stage II, you would set the boost controller at the max you want. It would reach that max at around 3500 and then just stay there. ok say you are driving on the freeway coasting at around 70 in 5th, a race presents itself, so you downshift to 4th...what happens now to the psi, it jumps to the max again, is this a good way to blow everything?
