85621, turn your EGR solenoid into a dual stage boost controller...... Posted by lickscissors, May-04-05 06:21 PM
i just thought id share with everyone my idea for a cheap dual stage boost controller...well sort of....get a egr solenoid (UFO looking thing) and i jb welded the little slots, and the saucer part so vacuum wasnt leaking...ill need to take a picture to show you...but anyways, the solenoid is normally open and when you add 12v to it, it shuts off air flow.... so stick a "T" before it, and after it...now get your MBC set at a higher boost setting and stick it between the other openings of the "T's"....so one vacuum line to T, T to solenoid and MBC, then back to T, then to wastegate....now hook up the solenoid to a switch in your car and kick it on when you want some more boost....works great in my car.....hope someone makes some use of this... doug

sounds interesting, although you must know that the thread is worthless without pics...
good work none the less! how well does it work anyways?

Single Stage EBC: Dual Stage EBC:
Just use a normal Mitsubishi solenoid. The chrysler one is 3x bigger than it needs to be, and leaks.
You can get Mitsu solenoids out of just about any Mitsu in the junkyard for $1-5. They're usually on the firewall or behind the headlight.

Ahahaha... I've never seen velcro used in an engine bay before. That's awesome. I guess if it works, it works.

The velcro car members.shaw.ca/dsm.1000q/Engineprimer/1G/bcs.htm :+ I only use a Blitz DSBC or name brand MBC... not worth risking my investment over a $5 solenoid and some velcro imo.

I had a 2 stage boost control setup a while back consisting of a 12 volt solenoid and a MBC..used a rocker switch inside the car to go from low to high boost. It worked really well actually..and its really cheap to build. I even wired up a few LEDs in the car too where the power mirrow switch would go..A red LED for low boost, and a Green LED for high boost...green means go baby :)

Wouldnt the single stage look more like this: ??

what's with the check valve?

so it doesnt suck air in when its under vacuum

Good eyes, yeah youre right. I'm going to change my SSEBC image to your diagram now to avoid confusion. Grabbed those off someone else's site. :owned
There's actually a half dozen different ways to hook this up, I did it differently when I was toying with this idea.
The solenoid between a tee and the MBC:
/--Manifold/Vacuum source | |tee----{solenoid}----{MBC}---->Check Valve>--atmosphere/filter housing | \--Wastegate Actuator

Why would you require 2 solenoids for the dual stage?
You can just put the solenoid before the MBC and leave it normally open. This causes the wastegate to see the boost level at whatever the MBC is set at. If you then close the solenoid, it now has to travel through the path with a higher boost setting (either a second MBC, or whatever). This means you only require one solenoid instead of 2 and works just as good, since the second MBC won't open during low boost (the first one opens sooner!) it doesn't really require a solenoid (unless you're just using a bleeder, which I wouldn't understand using for your high power setting since you lose power with it anyways).

YOu use 2 soleniods for a 3 stage controller. Low-Mid-High
